I see Ryan Brownlee is hosting some walk-on tryouts next Wednesday (9/3). I remember showing up at Dick Pawlow's tryouts way back in the day. I had no intention of trying out, I just wanted to see what he was looking for. As I recall, if you were a pitcher and could pop the catcher's mitt a bit you had a good chance. If you were another position player and had a decent 40 yd dash time, you also might have fared well. That was a long time ago and I wonder how kids are judged today. I go to college games and still see a lot of scouts packing their speed guns. But is measuring velocity the best they can do? What about detecting that late ball movement? I kid like Greg Maddux would have been way down the prospect list of many pro scouts and college coaches. Here is a great read about Greg Maddux:

To me, it seems like the technology is there today to detect late ball movement and whole lot of other hidden talents that an athlete may possess.

Could the next Greg Maddux be hanging out in Thompson Hall somewhere?
Embrace the pace of the race.
