The 4-week semester break is now over.

This is the attendance for the Men's and Women's home basketball games during that 4 weeks.

Men:
December 31 = 523
January 11 = 467
January 13 = 425

Women:
January 4 = 503
January 6 = 571

There were no Promotions for these 5 games.

Those are some unfortunate numbers. Western needs a multitude of things, I was of the mind that a new 6,000 seat arena would be part of the plan. Both of the most recent additions to the MVC have Arenas that seat 5,000 or less. Maybe we should shoot for a new arena that seats 5,000.

Side note, I live in Peoria Metro, Bradley used to average close to 10K per game in the 11,400 seat arena they play in. These days they average less than 5K in actual bodies that show up for games. Yes, Bradley had the unfortunate tenure of JoAnne Glasser, but even with that people just don't seem to go to athletic events like they used to.

It's not just Western. Macomb being somewhat remote I think contributes to lack of fan support.

I went to watch my High School play on Friday at there rival the school lines border each other and it was a really good crowd but the student population at the game was very small so maybe the issue starts at the high school level.

Those numbers are low but probably not much different than they were 40 years ago when I was around Macomb during the semester break. Promote all you want during this period. I doubt it would have much impact. The AD probably realizes that and wisely saves their money and efforts for later season games.

There was also some brutal cold weather during this time period, which I would definitely think would impact people being out and about if they didn't absolutely have to be......

In looking back at recent basketball history, we have had some success in getting people out for semester-break games. Just 4 years ago (January 11, 2014), the crowd was 2,113 for a home game vs Omaha.

My comment was referencing the period when students were not on campus. Technically, students were on campus for that game back in 2014.

The 2014 Spring Semester started on January 13. Most students probably came back to town on January 12 and would not have been around for that January 11th game.

Not to get too much into how we count attendees, but in what world is this over 2k people? (it is a good crowd, especially for a game technically over "break")

A world in which probably 95% of all residence hall RAs had nothing better to do than come out and cheer on the 'Necks. The way it should be.
