I'm curious as to what game he wanted to play that we didn't. Was it the 2 sport thing, was it a guarantee of immediate playing time, or something else. In the end, it doesn't matter, but that statement is cryptic enough to pique my interest. ;)
We don't have any issue with guys playing two sports. Both the elder McShane and Justin Fitzpatrick play on the baseball team...I'm sure if he wanted to run hurdles in the spring or whatever, it wouldn't be an issue...it'd only help his speed and save us a scholarship. I think it was probably more of an issue with him wanting a promise of playing time and full scholarship for his entire playing career. We're so deep at RB though that I don't think we can make that promise though and be able to follow through on it for sure. Don't promise what you can't deliver.

That's just the impression that I got from things though.
I think the kid made the wise decision for the kid. Cedar Falls is a few miles closer to Freeport and has a legit indoor Track and Field training facility. If I am Farley, I offer him half a schollie to play football (return specialist) and give him half a schollie to run track.
Embrace the pace of the race.

Hero Sports listed the top 40 recruits in the MVFC and WIU only had 3 listed. On the 21st they will be releasing the rankings for MVFC for the Class of 2018

UNI and ISU both have 3 as well and SDSU only has 2 so a lot of really good programs that don't have any more the team that is really starting to get some really good players is SIU and could be really good in a couple years.

I understand NDSU has a great program, and winning some National Championships. But I still have no clue why anyone would voluntarily agree to live in North Dakota for 4 or 5 years!?

I think there's a few things at play with NDSU...in addition to the championships and stuff.

1. It might be North Dakota, but they play in a dome, which really negates any "cold weather" issues regarding the games themselves. Plus USD and UNI play in domes too, so of the "northern" MVFC teams, the only time they'd have to play outside is every other year when they play at SDSU.

2. If you look at their recruits on that list, where are they from? Of the 13 players NDSU has on that list, 8 are from the Chicago area or further north (Minnesota, Wisconsin, etc.). Now, you do have a few from Florida, one from KS, one from MO, etc. but other than that, the rest of the guys are pretty much used to "real winter". The Florida guys are in for a rude awakening walking to classes around November/December, but otherwise, I don't think weather is that big of an issue. So, for the most part, these are northern-midwestern guys already. Moving to another northern-midwest city isn't going to be that much different than home in that case.

3. The Fargo metro area is about the same size as places like Topeka, KS or Champaign/Urbana, IL. Neither are huge metro areas, but they're pretty decent-sized places with plenty to do.

4. And probably one of the biggest reasons...there's not a ton of competition from other schools in the region. If you look across all of Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, and North Dakota...what FBS schools are there...Badgers, Gophers, Hawkeyes, Cyclones, Cornhuskers. All P5 schools in the Big 10 or Big 12. What does a kid do who is really good, but maybe not quite good enough to get an offer from a P5 team? If they're ok going a ways away from home, they have options, but if they want to stay in the region...there are no G5 schools. Closest are Northern Illinois or Wyoming. If you're from MN and you want to stay within a 1-state radius of home, you don't have a lot of options....NDSU, UND, SDSU, USD, and UNI are the "next best" scholarship options in that range. With NDSU having by far the most success out of those over the last decade, you'll get a lot of recruits leaning that direction.

I love Macomb and I love Western, but I can see some of the benefits to a place like Fargo too.

1) These kids spend maybe 3 or 4 hours 5-6 days a week in that Dome. The rest of their time they are in North Dakota weather.
2) I don't know why anyone would want to live in Northern MN or Wiscy either!
3) Topeka KS SUCKS. Never been to Champaign, my first trip will be to see the Necks upset the Illini!! If that's even an upset, we may be favored if it's even on the board.
4) You've got me here. Assuming someone actually likes living on the outskirts of the North Pole, the Mid Level D1 options are thin. But why is that? Because no one wants to live there! LOL
