The Macomb Inn

Does anyone know who owns the Macomb Inn?

I wish they would get an investor or sell the property to someone who can, and would, clean that place up to livable. If we are going to grow our attendance to where it could be, those rooms would be extremely helpful. We had family members that went to the UNI game, and left after the game to drive 4 hrs back to KC after they saw how bad their room was. And not structurally, but just extremely dirty, and not kept up with maintenance.

I understand that outside of football weekends, there are only a very few other dates that the space is needed. Because of this, new Hotels are not likely at this point. But how hard would it be to give 20-30 of their rooms a good scrubbing? Replace some curtains, bedding and towels? I'd also work with Chad at Chubby's, or another local restaurateur, to put some kind of restaurant at the property for additional revenue. Maybe even banquet or rental space. With my family and friends alone, we could fill 5-6 of these every home game. The other parents of the 100 players would probably have similar use. But as things are now, most of them I will have go to away games instead of Macomb. There just isn't rooms for everyone to stay. And not only would the group go the game, we would all go for dinner somewhere after, probably some drinks after that. Then breakfast and gas on the way out in the morning. The lack of rooms in town is really costing the economy of Macomb $$.

I have 3 rooms reserved for every Saturday of the season next year right now; and will cancel as I see which ones I will need. I had to do this a year in advance because I ran into some weekends last season where I couldn't get a room. There are already a couple Saturdays that are full for next season! Except for the Macomb Inn, and those trashy rooms are available for $60-$80 a night.

Wow, I make jokes like the next guy but, clearly by the tone of your commentary you must be dead serious.

If the hotel rooms are as you tell it the hotel should be closed. The proprietor of the hotel should be held accountable. Simply put, not acceptable.

I applaud your transparent "tell it as it is" conviction to truth and honor, which is the core of the Leatherneck being.

Thank you for sharing this.

A few years ago, the Macomb Inn tried to market itself as Off-Campus housing for Western students. Their plan was to make studio apartments out of the former motel rooms. They even planned to offer a food service option.

Apparently that was not successful.

With Tanner Hall not being used next fall, an option would be for the university to rent out the Tanner dorm rooms on peak-usage days for the area motels: Western football games, graduation day, etc.

Hotels, motels, casinos, ski lodges, resorts, and more all fall under the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) regulations for General Industry. The General Industry Standards are found in Title 29 Section 1910 of the Code of Federal Regulations (29 CFR 1910)

I think the conversation should start with the proprietor. Likely one person complaining won't get traction if the proprietor let it get that way in the first place.

Next, City council, bring it up with municipal entity.

Also, Illinois has stated standards. One can contact Illinois OSHA, they can shut a place down immediately if conditions are deemed to meet criteria. https://www2.illinois.gov/idol/Laws-Rul ... fault.aspx

I have had friends stay in the hotel rooms in the Union. They said it was really nice. But, also only a few rooms available. May be fun for some Alums to come back and stay in their old dorm!

The one and only event that hotel is good for is filling the bathtub up with ice, keystone light, and having an old fashioned high school hotel party. It’s a dump. I noticed the radio or tv antenna fell over here recently and it’s now just laying across part of the parking lot. But, residents of Macomb, don’t let you grass get taller than 6”, we don’t want the city looking bad!

If chemistry and biology students have a lab, do not Rec, Parks, and Tourism students also deserve one? Rather than investing in the Macomb Inn, I would go with a renovation of Tanner Hall. Maybe if we word the grant request really carefully, we can get the CDB to give us a "lab" and end up with a nice hotel, conference center, etc.
