ST_Lawson wrote: Sat Oct 12, 2019 4:03 pm Hopefully the players can take something from this season and use it to improve themselves. Times of adversity are often when we have the most personal growth and they help you really appreciate it when the good times come back around. It doesn't really seem likely that we'll win a game this season, which sucks obviously, but when they're done with football, these young men will continue on with their lives, hopefully stronger having gone through this.

I try to stay positive whenever I can, but it doesn't really seem like there's much to be positive about on the field right now.
I don't think anyone will argue that the young men on this team are excellent people. I'm sure they will be successful in whatever they choose to pursue.

I "use" this board to discuss football, not the players individually as "worthy/non-worthy" people. I wish each one of them the best that life has to offer.

With that said, If I hear Coach Elliot say one more time "there's things we need to work on" and "we need to do better", I just might go all Godzilla on Tokyo.

I didn't expect anywhere near the team we have had the last two years, but I also didn't expect this complete debacle.
I agree...maybe it was just me trying to find something positive about the state of our football program.

As I told a friend of mine earlier this afternoon...I've been watching Leatherneck football since 1996 and I don't think I've ever seen things this bad.

I think the blurb on the TV said this was Western's worst start since 1978, so no, you haven't seen anything this bad.

Well, yeah, but I didn't mean specifically W/L numbers...I meant more of how we're actually playing.

For reference for everyone, the last time we went winless was 1944 when we went 0-8. Our record for losses in a season was in 2009 when we went 1-10 (that was the year that Patterson was forced out and Hendrickson took over). It seems quite likely we'll surpass 10 losses this year since there's 12 games.

Shows how well I remember stuff. I thought the 1-10 season was Hendrickson's last.

The following year we rebounded, made the playoffs, beat Coastal Carolina at their place, then lost at Appalachian State in the snow. QB Matt Barr, RB Caulton Ray, WR Lito Senatus, and LB Kyle Glazier all had great seasons (and all except Ray were seniors). That bought him a few years in charge, but a 5-17 record over the next two years caused the administration to go a different direction.

Our current coaching staff will have two losing seasons in a row. How long do they allow them to stay if nothing changes?

I honestly don't know. If we were back in Western's hey-day, I wouldn't think long; but in the position we're in regarding enrollment and $$$, it might be longer than we think.

If Coach Elliott's contract is for 3 years, then I think we'll probably see him finish out the contract. We don't have the money to be buying out anyone's contract right now. If we have another losing season next year though...it's time to look elsewhere.

Second half surge propels the Sycamores past the Leathernecks.

I have come to a number of undeniable conclusions:

While we do have some talented athletes, we do not have enough talented athletes to compete in the MVFC and in the upper level of FCS. Candidly, this year we would struggle at the upper end of DII.

This coaching staff needs to go. I appreciate their hard work but this is not the right staff to compete at this level. No wishful thinking will change this observation.

We need a HC who has upper level FCS or FBS experience and who wants to accept the challenge to build a long term legacy at Western Illinois. When we were abandoned by both Nielsen and Fisher, this really hurt the "program" long term and ultimately, the university.
