Geoff Alexander, a star basketball player for Lincoln High School in the 1990s, has been hired as the University of Illinois men’s basketball team’s assistant to the head coach.

Illini head basketball coach Brad Underwood announced the hiring on Friday.

“We’re excited to have Geoff joining the Illinois basketball program,” Underwood said in a statement. “He and I have a long history together dating back to our days at Western Illinois and Daytona Beach. He has great familiarity with me and our system, and being from Lincoln and playing and recruiting this state, he has connections with coaches and programs throughout Illinois.”

Alexander, the son of longtime Lincoln High School basketball coach Neil Alexander, has spent the last five seasons as an assistant coach at Evansville. Prior to that he was an assistant coach at Eastern Illinois (2011-2012) and Idaho State (2006-2011).

He was an assistant for Underwood at Daytona State from 2003-2006 and served as an assistant at Jacksonville (Texas) College.

Alexander’s coaching career started as a two-year graduate assistant at his alma mater, Western Illinois University, from 2000-02. He competed for the Leathernecks for two seasons from 1998-2000 while Underwood was a WIU assistant, following two seasons of play at Southeastern (Iowa) Community College.

At Lincoln, Alexander still ranks in the high school program’s top 10 for career points, rebounds and assists. He graduated in 1995.
