Really like the freshman QB - he's made a big difference in the play today (and yeah, I know we're still losing, but at least we're losing to a better team).

Tennessee Tech won 66-20
Cason Carswell was 34 of 48 for 343 yards. 2 Touchdowns. 1 Interception.
Western had 375 Total Yards: 343 yards Passing. 32 yards Rushing.
Tennessee Tech had 618 Total Yards: 452 yards Passing. 166 yards Rushing.
Attendance at Tennessee Tech = 5,108

Defense is still obviously a problem, like I said in another thread I don't think you can replace the DC again, can't really have 3 DCs in 3 years, have to try to get some continuity imo. Looks like the Freshman QB is the real deal, hopefully they can keep him around. If so the other QBs will probably depart.

Tenn Tech seems vastly improved from team we beat last year. Stopped run better but had hard time with pass defense. Maybe we can win some games down the stretch schedule gets more favorable. Go Western!

Once again I am scratching my head wondering why the defense is so far behind the offense when it comes to talent level. There has to be some logical reason for it. Maybe it is simply that at the lower levels, better athletes (the speedier ones) are always put on the offensive side of ball. In small schools, good athletes play on both sides of the ball although most are not D1 caliber players. Large schools have a better talent pool to choose from but even there, I will bet my last bottom dollar that the same rule applies: showcase your best athletes on offense. I think the best recruiting strategy is to go after quickness first wherever you can find it. You can always put some beef on them after they get here. Maybe decide whether they are better on one side or the other after they arrive as well.

I have wondered this myself in Davis tenure. We are all aware of his history with QB and offensive success but has there been a neglect in recruiting and/or coaching on the defensive side of the ball? We've given up so many big plays the last 2 seasons and it seems opposing offenses have their way with us run or pass.
Don't think we would have beat Tech yesterday but it was 24-17 in the 2nd quarter with a freshman QB and BJ & Doc said this was the 6th different set of starting WRs we have rolled out this year and 5th different set of starting OL due to injuries. I would agree all in all a pretty remarkable performance for Carswell going on the road completing 70% of passes for well over 300 yards in his first college start vs that defense.
