Prior to 1995, there were 3 boards operating the state universities:
University of Illinois Board
Board of Governors
Board of Regents
Western was a part of the Board of Governors.
That all changed in 1995 under Governor Jim Edgar when the State went to 9 separate boards.

One comment on the article. It is not unexpected that transfers have higher ending GPAs. Their community college GPA (or from any other school) doesn't transfer in, just the credits. So if they struggled in their first couple of years of college course, which is typical for college students, that doesn't impact their WIU GPA. Now on the other hand, maybe the courses they transfer in were easier and their GPA was higher, but the articulated classes are considered to be comparable in content and rigor, arguing against that issue.

Eastern Illinois University held a panel discussion yesterday (Nov 1) concerning Higher Education specialization.
The possibility of consolidating universities to avoid redundancy or to increase specialization was discussed.
With campuses being limited to specific majors, diversity in interests would begin to disappear at the state universities.
Richard Wandling, chair for the EIU Political Science department and one of the two panelists, said this specialization would make it harder for students to change their major and limit exploration.
Although the panel agreed that things are not very hopeful right now, Wandling said Eastern should stay positive about its future.

Well the fact that the housing market is depressed is not a total surprise after the state budget crisis, but I was impressed with the comments the mayor made concerning manufacturing in the area. I wonder just how many votes the governor is going to get in the Macomb area next fall?

The Eastern Illinois University Board of Trustees has given university President David Glassman until the end of the semester to make a recommendation on intercollegiate athletics. The administration is still talking about the benefits and liabilities that could come from altering, or even eliminating, some sports teams.
Some options could include keeping sports teams as they currently are, eliminating some, or keeping all of them and altering the number of scholarships provided.
EIU is also exploring going to a 13-week semester instead of the current 15 weeks. Classes would have to be longer under the 13-week system. One of the advantages of a shorter semester would be a lower Room & Board cost for dorm residents.

Another advantage is that it really helps those students who depend on getting a part/full-time job between semesters, during the holidays, etc., to help pay the bills.

Eastern Illinois University is considering another proposal to boost enrollment.
They are considering an unlimited meal plan and having a microwave and refrigerator installed in every dorm room.
The unlimited meal plan will be an added option for students. The proposed meal plan will be the cheapest of its kind when it is compared to unlimited meal plans at universities like Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.
The microwave and refrigerator idea as well as the unlimited meal plan came about to make Eastern more marketable to potential students.
