During the campaign, J.B. Pritzker was asked his views on higher education in Illinois.
His reply: "lllinois should have world-class institutions of higher learning that attract students from across the country and provide Illinoisans the education and training they need to succeed in 21st-century jobs. But without sustained, long-term investment, students of all ages will miss out on the opportunities higher education can provide. thanks 712, sounds promising but that takes money and Illinois is struggling in that dept, but doesn't sound like he thinks some Universities should close or anything

While it all sounds good that costs didn't go up, what about the Board-approved "annual rate of $1,684 for student health insurance." Unless you are part of an HMO with co-pay not % coverage, this is effectively an mandatory fee, which they argue will cover you while meeting your regular insurance deductible. Egads, how many students rack up $1684 in medical bills a year. All student-athletes and international students are required to have the specific student health insurance, which is in addition to the Student Health Center $9.41/credit hour part of the mandatory student fees.

That insurance price of $1,648 is very high in comparison to other state universities.
At UIUC, the fee is $397 for undergraduates and $508 for graduate students for the 2017-2018 academic year.
The fee is $220 for the academic year at Eastern Illinois.

I'm not an expert, but it sounds correct to me.
Larger base of users usually equals better negotiating power and better rates for everyone.

WIU's student is 12-month, not just the academic term, as it covers break periods as long as you are enrolled for the upcoming term, but wow, definitely so, so much higher that what students can get at other state schools. Anyone know if it is effectively mandatory at those schools, like it is at Western, or just an option if you don't have some other kind of insurance?

The 12-month insurance cost at Eastern Illinois is $307.
Eastern Illinois requires that all students who enroll in 9 or more on-campus hours, all Graduate Assistants under contract to the University, and all International students enrolled in 3 or more on-campus hours, be covered by health insurance. Students enrolled part-time with 5 or more hours may apply to purchase coverage.
