At the bottom of the committee announcement there is an 11:00 presser with MT last week. Pretty much explains who is interested, what the timing might be, and the plan to meet over break. He seems genuinely pleased with the interest in the position and from what I gather from the discussion, 1-3 candidates will be involved unless something more interesting happens. jc

Heavens NO! President does not have the time to devote to it. Should be under Advancement and Public Services or the similar. At least that is the way Duke does it and I always look there to see how things SHOULD be done.

I think that Athletics had been under that umbrella back in the Larry Mortier days.

Presidential Oversight of Athletics
While the NCAA rules clearly place the responsibility for the conduct of intercollegiate athletics on the desk of the institution’s president, there are no clear guidelines that define an optimum chain of command. The appointed leader of the educational institution determines whether the athletics director reports directly to him or her or through another senior but lower officer. In cases where the athletics program is a politically sensitive program of highest interest to trustees and alumni, the athletics director may report directly to the president or principal. At larger institutions, the athletics director may report to a vice president for student life or student affairs or a vice president for administration which often represents a preferable reporting line. The simple fact is that presidents do not have the time to provide the adequate daily oversight required to support the athletics program.

Question, is Western really so big it needs the AD to report to a VP, or is the athletics debacle one that demands the president's direct attention? If a VP, who would be best at the job, i.e., the person, not the position?

Not saying that this is the only way to go, but just for the heck of it, I checked out the org charts for a few schools that have successful FCS football programs:

The short version, for those that don't want to click through all those links...as near as I can tell, all of the AD's at those universities report directly to their President's office. So, it sounds like that might be the recommended direction...or at least, it's worked for those schools.

Good research ST. I would like to retract my earlier statement about Duke. I think I was looking at the wrong chart for them. From what I can tell now, they too have the AD (a Vice-President) report directly to their President. Does the President have 100% say in his leadership structure (broad and flat vs. deep and narrow) or does the BOT get involved in that?

The BOT hires the President, but the President hires his VPs. Only when a new VP position is created, such as was for Rives at the QC, does the BOT become involved. Now, if the President is making poor choices in VPs, the BOT could tell the President they weren't happy, but the BOT doesn't hire, or as far as I know, even participate in VP hirings. That is one reason is is rather odd to have a BOT member, Cathy Early, on the head FB coach search committee. Yes, she represents the community and is an major athletic contributor, but still she's a BOT member, so that should have eliminated here from the micromanagement of hiring a head FB coach.
