Eastern Illinois is hoping for a freshman class of 700 for the fall semester and a total enrollment of 6,000.

"Too big to fail" institutions like the University of Illinois will be kept afloat at the expense of the other state universities.

I don't have any numbers, but it looks likely that we will exceed what we were expecting in terms of incoming new students. I mean...it's still likely going to be a decrease vs last year's freshmen class, but considering what they thought it was going to be earlier in the year, it looks like we're probably going to do better than internal initial estimates.

Of the four schools routinely mentioned in news articles as being hurt the most and in the most perilous situation-EIU,WIU,CSU and Northeastern Illinois- it seems Western might be the most solid of the four. Not saying it's great, but maybe in a position to survive in the fall and later.

That class at EIU looks very small, and with school finances and financial stability more and more enrollment driven, they are really hurting.

If that enrollment trend continues at Eastern (700 freshmen), their enrollment would be in the 3,000 range in a few years unless they would be able to supplement it with a huge influx of transfer students. You have to wonder how long that they will be able support Division 1 athletics.

Governors State University must be doing ok. You seldom see their name mentioned in the news. They just completed their first year of playing NAIA athletics. Prior to that, they had intramurals and club sports (like Northeastern Illinois).
