Today's Peoria Journal-Star reported a 25% drop in freshmen enrollment at Eastern Illinois, down to 1,251.

Overall enrollment at EIU is 7,415.

Wow, I had to read it twice to see if I missed something. Current WIU enrollment could be 20K or 2K or anywhere in between. The Donald makes the same blunder when he talks about Hillary's proposed Syrian refugee policy. Ask him how many refugees a 550% increase corresponds to, no chance in hell he could tell you. I forgive the author as he is learning his craft. No excuse whatsoever for The Donald.

The start of FYE program was the beginning of Western's enrollment decline. Western's FYE was initially based on a trial in the Honor's Program where students took 2-3 courses together. But the conclusion that FYE improved GPA was faulty as there was no comparison group. Guess what, Honor's students have a higher GPA than non-honor's students! Who would've thought When Western's FYE was started for all students, it defied the successful approach at other schools and tried to reinvent the wheel, with failure from the start. With the emergence of the Univ 100 course, it has begun to use evidence-based strategies, but the continued reliance on the low-enrollment general education course benefits the faculty far more than the students, nor is it used to show connection with general education and major courses.

So, Tere, you are blaming the FYE- First Year Experience class- on Western's declining enrollment? I have read your post several times, but see no connection.

We are still waiting to hear the 10-day enrollment numbers from Chicago State, Northeastern Illinois, and Governors State.

NEIU is at 9,538, a decrease of 353 students (3.57%) from last year. They did have a decent freshman class, however...it was up 7.1%.

Chicago State and Governors State have not released their numbers yet.

7.1% increase in freshmen enrollment is a positive for Northeastern Illinois.

In looking at the Table on the above referenced web site, Eastern Illinois, SIU-Carbondale, and Northern Illinois had the biggest negative numbers.

It helps alot that NEIU has 5 places around the city of Chicago and suburban area where students can take their classes. Surprised it is not more than 7% given the big drops elsewhere.
