A state-wide grassroots effort to create a strong and viable 3rd party in the state would be far more effective than attempting to redraw legislative district lines. We could call it the "CUBS" party (Citizens United for a Better State). Oh wait, that CUBS acronym is already taken (Citizens United for Baseball in Sunshine). So what should we call the new party?

How about "EBS" - (E)nough (B)ull (S)***
This one kind of has a nice ring to it: CARDS (Citizens Against Republican and Democratic Stupidity)
Who doesn't like a good CARD party? My guess is it would really catch on in the southern part of the state.

Seriously? No fire blankets in biology labs? If it is really a problem, it seems easily correctable with a GoFundMe. Or I have mentioned before getting the academic depts involved on game day. Why not have a few biology majors walk the aisles of both east and west stands and pass along a donation bucket. I would be very surprised if they came away with anything less than five hundred dollars on a bright sunny well-attended football game day. That should buy at least five fire blankets.

WIU has a GoFundMe sponsor: it's called the State of Illinois. Are you seriously suggesting that basic safety supplies should now be left to charity?

The University is exposing itself to tremendous legal risk by putting students and employees in real danger without these basic supplies. I can hear the court argument now. 'Well, we really wanted to make sure students didn't get burned to death by dangerous chemical fires, but we couldn't find students to pass a hat at the football fame or get alumni to donate online.'

Granted I do not know all of the details here. But I assume our professors have good common sense and would not subject their students to experiences which are potentially unsafe. Therein lies the real problem IMO - our students may be getting shortchanged a bit in their education. So give me one good reason why a charitable endeavor should not be used to plug that gap when the State cannot get their act together and do it properly.

Woa, woa there! I was the science department chair of a large high school in the Chicago suburbs for 26 years so I have just little bit of expertise in this regard. First, fire blankets are basically useful fire prevention tool for someone who does not know how to use a fire extinguisher. You basically cover the source with the blanket, smothering the flame. If a student or faculty member caught their clothes on fire, this would be a way to put it out although it is a bit clumsy to use. But if you know how to use a fire extinguisher, than that is definitely the way to go. So the question is, if there is not a fire blanket, then there must be a fire extinguisher which is a state law. You might still though have an empty box in a classroom for a fire blanket that was never taken down. As a biology major, I can't ever remember heating something over a bunsen burner in Waggoner Hall. We did use flammable solvents and such, but always in a controlled vented environment. A trip to the A&P room will find a stench of formalyn/preservative and a venting fan that is not often shut off. Chemical spill are usually handled with a "spill kit" or if an individual spills something like acid on their clothes or splatters their eyes, a shower drench or eyewash is the accepted way of emergency response. Once again, bulky fire blankets have a shelf life and slowly loose their effectiveness as time marches on. Fire extinguishers are an absolute in all lab classrooms and they are checked and tagged yearly by a fire extinguisher company and then double checked with the fire department. So let's not start a go fund me for something that is not needed! ;) jc

And as NFS71 says above, if fire blankets are not needed for biology labs, use the money for something else. The possible best thing about students going around asking for charity is that it brings attention to the direness of the current situation.

One more thing while my keyboard is hot. Why are we not doing 50-50 drawings every home game? Put a different academic dept in charge of each one and let them keep the rewards.

Seal, I agree lets think outside the box and stop with the whoa is me attitude. Yes you have to keep fighting for state funding, but their are other avenues also.
