ST- I don't believe Wash U, SLU, Lindenwood or even UMSL are losing students to SIU-e. SIU-C, Western and some of the Missouri state schools are competing with Edwardsville. Students interested in Wash U are generally not interested in SIU-e. The St. Louis metro is a largely populated area, Missouri and Illinois. SIU-e presence throughout western illinois is huge, talk to hs counselors. It's been the "hot" school for several years. The reasons given by most students- location, new campus, new residence halls, plenty of off campus living, location, new campus, is heard over and over again.

Over the last several years, SIU-C has struggled on enrollment while SIU-e flourished. In fact, SIU-C just borrowed some money from Edwardsville to assist them during this crises. SIU-C is on a big downward trend. We used to tease folks at SIU-C about the "main" campus in Edwardsville, and SIU-C being a branch  That never went over well.

Western's branch in the Quad Cities could eventually follow that same scenario. Large populated area, new campus, good location etc. UIS is basically only a couple of hours from Macomb, where the Quad Cities would be a more "regional" area without other state universities close by- I don't believe.
If only it worked that way. The QC campus has never grown, just languished, despite the massive investment.

The university should have put the money they wasted on the QC campus to use in Macomb.

The closest would be Northern Illinois University. It is 104 miles via I-88 from Moline to DeKalb.

The news keeps getting worse every day that the state budget impasse goes on.

Northeastern Illinois University has announced that it was canceling three days of classes in an effort to save on salary costs as it struggles to make ends meet without financial support from the state. NEIU employees were already asked to take five unpaid furlough days during the recent spring break.

Class cancellations are scheduled for April 11, April 12, and May 1. Administrators were negotiating with the school’s employee unions to determine if they will implement a “full University shutdown” on those days.

“For Northeastern, this is a state of emergency,” interim president Richard J. Helldobler said in a statement, noting that more furlough days will be “inevitable” without more money from the state.

QC is far more marketable. Further, even with a marketball campus like QC, similar in location to SIUe, without good leadership, it, like Macomb, is a bust.

The General Assembly has now started their 2-week spring break.

No state budget in place.

The state universities are starting to run out of money. Northeastern Illinois University has already laid off their staff for 5 days in March. Now they will lay-off again and cut 3 days off of the spring semester just to stay afloat. That means 8 working days lost.

The paychecks for all State Representatives, State Senators, Governor and his staff should be held pending a budget. Why should they continue to be paid while others lose jobs or take furloughs because the elected officials can't do their jobs.

On Thursday, the Illinois House approved another stopgap spending plan that provides $800 million to human-service programs and higher education.

The House voted 64-45-1 on the bill, with Democrats supporting it and Republicans voting against it.

One of those votes against the stopgap came from Norine Hammond (Macomb).
