This is a pretty good idea, I think. The state isn't putting forth the money to help the Broadcasting department get new equipment, so they're turning to "crowdfunding": http://wiu.edu/cofac/bcj/crowdfunding.php

Their end goal is to raise $13,000 for the following:

• NewTek TalkShow - allows people to be interviewed live via Skype.
• Panasonic AG-DVX200 Camcorder - professional-level 4K/HD camcorder for use in the field (like at sporting events, for example)
• Camera Jib for TV Studio - allows the camera to be moved around the studio much more safely and easily

One alumnus has also issued a challenge gift where every dollar given up to $2,500 until tomorrow will be matched (I think they're about $500 away from that maximum right now).
