He's unlikely to get it because they rarely give the big awards to players not on playoff-level teams, but still a great accomplishment.

Think Joiner is a stud and glad he came to WIU and will hopefully be back next year. Scott you are correct he doesn't have much of a chance because of our poor record.  Great for him and WIU though.

Tough to hype someone on a 2 win team, knowing the fact he had some many chances because we were on defense a lot and they were always getting to the second level.  Not taking anything away, as you still need to make the play, but wish more of those tackles were by the DL and especially the LB's.

Honestly think Lawson should have been on there.  Dude isn't the biggest guy, but can hit and has a nose for the ball.  His INT, FF, FR and tackles should have put him on the Valley first team and on the Buchanan list. Hope he gets a look at the next level.

Hope Joiner is back next year and blows it up again, but on a playoff team.

He's a senior, isn't he?

Listed as a Senior, however...
2017 - sat out as redshirt at Jacksonville State
2018 - played in 13 games at JSU
2019 - played in 5 games at JSU
2020/Spring 2021 - did not play, transferred to WIU, wouldn't have counted against eligibility anyway
2021 Fall - played in all 11 games at WIU

So, it looks like he has 1 more year of eligibility left that he can play for us, if he wants to.

This award goes to the best defensive player in the country correct?  Record should not matter in my opinion.

He played the toughest schedule of anyone listed…PERIOD!

Records shouldn't matter, but they do. In the 26 years they've been giving out the Buchanan award, only twice has a player from a team with a losing record gotten it...Karter Shult with a 5-6 Northern Iowa team in 2016, and Derrick Lloyd with 2-9 James Madison in 2001. Also, considering he didn't finish in the top 4 for MVFC Defensive Player of the Year voting (he did finish 3rd in the conference Newcomer of the Year award voting), it's unlikely he's going to finish in the top 3 (finalists that get invited to the banquet in Frisco) for the overall top defensive player award.

2020 - Jordan Lewis, Southern University (5-1)
2019 - Dante Olson, Montana (10-4)
2018 - Zach Hall, Southeast Missouri State (9-4)
2017 - Darius Jackson, Jacksonville State (10-2)
2016 - Karter Shult, Northern Iowa (5-6)
2015 - Tyrone Holmes, Montana (8-5)
2014 - Kyle Emanuel, North Dakota State (15-1)
2013 - Brad Daly, Montana State (7-5)
2012 - Caleb Schreibeis, Montana State (11-2)
2011 - Matt Evans, New Hampshire (8-4)
2010 - J.C. Sherritt, Eastern Washington (13-2)
2009 - Arthur Moats, James Madison (6-5)
2008 - Greg Peach, Eastern Washington (6-5)
2007 - Kroy Biermann, Montana (11-1)
2006 - Kyle Shotwell, Cal Poly (7-4)
2005 - Chris Gocong, Cal Poly (9-4)
2004 - Jordan Beck, Cal Poly (9-2)
2003 - Jared Allen, Idaho State (9-4)
2002 - Rashean Mathis, Bethune-Cookman (11-2)
2001 - Derrick Lloyd, James Madison (2-9)
2000 - Edgerton Hartwell, Western Illinois (9-3)
1999 - Al Lucas, Troy State (11-2)
1998 - James Milton, Western Illinois (11-3)
1997 - Chris McNeil, North Carolina A&T (7-4)
1996 - Dexter Coakley, Appalachian State (7-4)
1995 - Dexter Coakley, Appalachian State (12-1)

#6 is awesome and hope someone can confirm he's coming back.  #6 rated defensive player in the FCS coming back is a nice talking point when discussing our potential with HC candidates.

Huge fan of Troy Andersen who's in the top 3.  Was just talking to my 4th grade son about him on Saturday.  Had him watch some of their game and the NIU game to watch Clint and see 2 guys that are great teammates, work hard and will do whatever the team needs them to do.

Anyways, lets get Joiner back, be a playoff team and he can be in the top 3 next year!!!!

Most likely yes, since he used his transfer.
