At Kansas State, Head Football Coach Bill Snyder and Athletic Director John Currie have personally paid $5,000 to open the dorms early after Thanksgiving in order to increase student attendance at the game versus Kansas on November 29th:

$5K is chump change. Would not even come close to paying the added cost of keeping the dorms open and feeding the students for those two days. They need to talk to the Alabama boosters.

During those years when Western would host a first-round playoff game on that Saturday after Thanksgiving, the dorms would open up early for those students wanting to return to campus a day early to attend the game.

Not true! Kansas State officials told Snyder and Currie what it would cost [$5,000] to do so and they decided to personally to foot the bill. Student support of the football team is outstanding. Most of the students come from rural areas in Kansas. I have attended many games there. A great college football setting. Reminds me of Western in so many ways...

Bob, do the students at KSU consider this to be a big rivalry game even with Kansas never being much of football power? If not, who is the big rival for KSU?

Having a number of relatives in Kansas City- yes, this is a big game. No matter what the records are.
Hats off to Snyder and the AD for putting up money to assist students who might want to come back early and need a place to stay. This is called being involved with the students and recognizing their interests.
Heading to KC today, and looking forward to Strouds and Oklahoma Joes, Bob.
I noticed from the program from last weeks game, my wife and I attended 5 of the top 10 crowds at WESTERN- several in our era of early 70's.

Additional thoughts- I really wish WESTERN had a "heated" rival in football. Something where both schools recognize it as such, and have that attitude of- even if we win only one game, It's got to be against _____. Basketball too, however, The Summit League make up just doesn't seem to have that potential.

Before the Dakota schools joined the conference, a game with Oral Roberts in any sport seemed to generate the most interest and crowd attention.

Yes! The game with Kansas is called
The Sunflower Showdown. In football, the Wildcats usually prevail, often by large margins. However, KU often prevails in basketball. KU students refer to KSU as the "farm school" while KSU students refer to KU as the "snob school." You get the picture...

I hope you enjoy your visit to the KC area! You cannot go wrong with Strouds [fried chicken] and Oklahoma Joe's [BBQ]. Joe's is the best of many BBQ joints in KC.
The attendance at many of those Western football games during the early 70's was indeed fantastic. The games were "can't miss" events for the students and the football team was very good against some then excellent competition.
