Trivia question: Which former WIU men's assistant basketball coach has an NCAA national championship under his belt as a head coach?

If you need help, Goggle this:

basketball "Western Illinois" "national championship" assistant "margenthaler OR kerwin OR thomas OR molinari OR wright"

Underwood could very well be the next one. He does appear to be a consistent winner. Will be tougher in the Big 12.

I am a big believer in promoting from within when there is the "alma mater torch" to pass on. At the very top level, I do think a lot of the successful programs have head coaches and/or assistant or two who actually played at the school they are coaching. Syracuse is an extreme example this year. All coaches played for the Cuse. Lon Kruger coached at his alma mater (Kansas State) for a number of years. Roy Williams played JV ball at Carolina and tutored under Dean Smith. However, at the mid-major level, pretty difficult to get a good former player or student of the game to stick around very long.

Steve Hesser was a assistant under Jim Kerwin and he won the title in 2013 @ NCAAII Drury.
