I still wish Billy had a little Coach K in him and was willing to experiment with some zone D. We are long and not overly athletic at some positions. We are a fairly young team as well. Last year, Duke played about 50% of their defensive possesions in each zone and man defenses and switched to mostly zone later in the season. Why did he make that move with so much athletic talent to work with? Simple. His kids were young. Zone is easier to grasp hold of than all of the intricacies of a man defense. IMHO, Gilbeck would be on the court for more minutes if he guarded an area instead of a man and had some other long arms acting as his "wingman" for some protection.

Nothing wrong with having "a little zone" ready in your bag of tricks. Does not have to be a trapping zone defense but I would have that in my bag of tricks too depending on the personnel. Zone had a bit of a lazy connotation to it for many years and then Syracuse won a national championship using it and the rest is "new" history! ;) jc

If I am not mistaken, I do believe they played some zone at the beginning of the second half against Nebraska. It may be in their bag, so hopefully they will go to it more.
