Two exciting games on Saturday night:

#1 North Dakota State beat #8 Denver 71-69.
#7 Purdue Fort Wayne beat #2 South Dakota State 77-74.

Attendance for the Saturday night session = 8,614.

South Dakota State loses their first-round game for the second year in a row.

Trailing by four with 14.4 seconds to go, SDSU freshman Noah Freidel drilled a contested 3-pointer – his seventh of the game – to pull the Jacks within a point at 75-74.

Friedel had four fouls, so SDSU coach Eric Henderson subbed in reserve point guard Brandon Key for Friedel, so that Key or anyone else on the Jacks could quickly foul to send PFW to the line.

But when the ball was in-bounded, nobody grabbed at a Mastodon jersey. Two quick passes led to a Marcus DeBerry layup, and with no timeouts the Jacks couldn’t get Freidel back into the game. They nervously worked the ball back up the floor and never even got off a shot.

The last #7 seed to beat a #2 seed happened in 2009, when South Dakota State beat Oral Roberts, 72-69 in overtime.

After winning tournament titles in 2016, 2017 and 2018, it was the second straight quarterfinal-exit for the Jackrabbits, who were the top seed in the 2019 event.

ORU hitting on all cylinders in the 2nd half. Bison in for a struggle if they play like that tomorrow.

How the hell is former Quad Cities area player Marlon Stewart playing all the way in Grand Forks?
Was he even on Billy's radar?

Folks, we have no South Dakota team in the Men's Semis this year. So much for the Denny factor.

Update: Stewart was initially recruited by Creighton so maybe too big for us.

Brian Jones who was there HC before this year was from Rock Island so there may have been a relationship. PFW has a freshman from Moline who is going to be a great player for them.
