I’ll be rooting hard for murphysboro to beat SHG next week.

SHG should be a 6A school.

Yes, they also recruit the entire Springfield area.

I feel the same about any private school. They should be the same class as their public counterpart.

check out their schedule/results this year. Very talented 5A/6A schools couldn’t keep it close.

It looks like only some private schools get the "multiplier". If the team has had a high amount of success, they are applied a 1.65 enrollment multiplier: https://www.ihsa.org/Schools/Enrollment ... s-fall.htm

So, for example, Springfield SHG has won the first couple of rounds in the playoffs the last couple of years, but has not advanced enough to receive the multiplier. They are listed as having 607 students (https://www.ihsa.org/Schools/Enrollment ... nrolln.htm) so that's where they are grouped for the playoffs.
Quincy Notre Dame, however, has had a bit more success over the past few years, so they did receive the multiplier this year, which means their 388.5 listed enrollment counts as 641 for the purposes of football playoff classification.

You can see the enrollment numbers of the various 4A teams in the playoffs here: https://www.ihsa.org/Sports-Activities/ ... ummary.htm
Macomb, at 606 was the 4th smallest 4A school in the playoffs this year.

Regarding Springfield SHG's record, they definitely "punch higher than their weight class". The teams they played that had winning records...beat 8-1 Rochester 62-27, beat 6-3 Jacksonville 55-14, beat 7-2 Chatham Glenwood (a school with 1400 students), 49-0. Fellow 4A school Rochester (793 enrollment) only lost to SHG this season and have won their first two playoff games. If they beat 11-0 Carterville and if SHG beats Murphysboro, then they'll play each other again. Chatham Glenwood was in the 6A playoffs and narrowly lost their first round game 49-42 to Quincy HS.

Murphysboro gets smoked by SHG 51-13.

Father son match up to go to state championship between Rochester and SHG.

SHG wiped the floor with Rochester earlier this year to the tune of 62-27.

SHG is not a 4A school.
