Looking at our women's team over the the last few years, things haven't been going the way that most Leatherneck fans would probably like them to have gone.
The 2016/17 season was the year we won the conference regular season title, then the conference tournament title, and played at Florida State in the NCAA tournament.
Since then we've had the following:
17/18 - 22-10, 10-4 in conference, finished 3rd, went 1-1 in conference tournament, played in WNIT
18/19 - 12-18, 8-8 in conference, finished 5th, 0-1 in conference tournament
19/20 - 15-15, 9-7 in conference, finished tied for 3rd, 0-1 in conference tournament
20/21 - 8-16, 6-8 in conference, finished 5th, 1-1 in conference tournament
21/22 - 14-15, 5-13 in conference, finished 7th, 0-1 in conference tournament
Then this year, 10-19 in the regular season, 5-13 in conference, finished 9th, probably either 1-1 or 0-1 in the conference tournament
32-50 (.390) overall in the last three years
16-34 (.320) in the conference in that span
1 conference tournament win in 4 years although with the new format and us at #9 going against the #8 to start the tournament, we have a decent chance for another. With the winner going against #1 SDSU, I don't see us pulling off any more than that though. In past years, without UST, we'd have been #8, and going against #1 SDSU.
I get that we are at a distinct disadvantage in terms of recruiting compared with pretty much everyone else in the conference. They all either have significantly better facilities than us, are located in much larger cities, or both.
I guess what I'm wondering is:
- What do you think the team needs to do over the next couple of years for Gravina's seat to cool off again?
- If the team doesn't improve and stays around the 7th-9th range, how long do you think things go until the AD decides it's time to move on?
- Or, do you think that because of what he's done in the past and his relationships with the community, that it's his job until he decides to step down, regardless of the team's on-court performance?
