Re: Updates to faculty layoff plan and other stuff

Who pays the taxes when everyone bails? Seems to me we've kicked the can down the road as far as we can, and the day of reckoning is here.

Re: Updates to faculty layoff plan and other stuff

I hope the light of JBP removes the shadow of BruceR come February. I don’t intend for this post to be political, but I’ve seen a lot of Rauner bashing here that I don’t think is justified. And note that I did NOT vote for Rauner in the last election. But let’s look at the facts. According to the S...

Re: Enrollment Updates

This is an 11% decrease from a year ago

Re: WIU eliminating funding for WIUM/WIUW (our local public radio station)

There was a big and very vocal crowd at the public BOT meeting this morning: http://www.tspr.org/post/hundreds-urge-reversal-tspr-funding-decision Quite a few people very angry with this recent decision and how it went down (the fact that it was a 100% funding cut without any input from leadership ...

Re: Updates to faculty layoff plan and other stuff

It's not really as simple as just cutting benefits though. As it currently stands, courts have said that they legally can't cut pension benefits, so they'd have to change the state constitution to be able to do it. Something that can't go on forever, won't. Re: Updates to faculty layoff plan and other stuff

The Wall Street Journal discussed underfunded pensions in a July 30th article (behind a paywall): The Pension Hole for U.S. Cities and States Is the Size of Germany’s Economy Many retirement funds could face insolvency unless governments increase taxes, divert funds or persuade workers to relinquish...

Re: Updates to faculty layoff plan and other stuff

From Jim Nowlan's column in today's Peoria Journal-Star: The gargantuan public employee pension funding shortfall at the state and local levels, decades in the making, is overwhelming the state fiscally and badly needs fresh thinking. This is the root of our problems, including the budget standoff....

Re: President Thomas Looking Elsewhere

From the Boston Globe article: The search for a chancellor at UMass Boston came to an abrupt end on Monday when all three finalists withdrew, four days after the faculty at the Dorchester campus called the candidates unqualified for the job. UMass President Martin T. Meehan reported the end of the s...
