Are the steam tunnels still in use today?wiu712 wrote: ↑Fri Nov 29, 2019 8:28 am When Western was growing and expanding back in the 1960's, the thinking was to re-locate Hanson Field in order to use that space for classroom buildings.
That idea was dropped when the costs of re-locating the steam tunnels (that run underneath the football field) were considered.

Embrace the pace of the race.
Some are, yes. I don't know what percentage of campus is still on steam heat, but there are definitely buildings that are.sealhall74 wrote: ↑Fri Nov 29, 2019 6:14 pmAre the steam tunnels still in use today?wiu712 wrote: ↑Fri Nov 29, 2019 8:28 am When Western was growing and expanding back in the 1960's, the thinking was to re-locate Hanson Field in order to use that space for classroom buildings.

712, moving Hanson Field across University into the Ravine did not have anything to do with the steam tunnels. But the football locker room attached to Western Hall and the Rec center had everything to with them. jc
The thinking back in the 1960's was to move the football field to the area now known as Vince Grady Field (across from Bayliss-Henninger). That would free-up space in the central part of the campus for classroom purposes.Neckfansince71 wrote: ↑Sat Nov 30, 2019 5:15 pm Moving Hanson Field across University into the Ravine did not have anything to do with the steam tunnels. The original Rec Center was built much later. It opened in 1997. The addition to the Rec Center opened in 2008.
