In lieu of flowers or donations, please go yell at a random basketball official in his memory...

Coach Kerwin passed away last Friday. Be sure to go read the obit...

But for a guy named Homer, Jim would have been in our HOF.

I still cringe every time I see Homer on TV.sealhall74 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 17, 2021 9:51 am But for a guy named Homer, Jim would have been in our HOF.

Homer made a good living recruiting tall kids from across the pond. Still making a good living as Associate AD at Valpo.Necks2003 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 17, 2021 2:54 pmI still cringe every time I see Homer on TV.sealhall74 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 17, 2021 9:51 am But for a guy named Homer, Jim would have been in our HOF.

Agree, Jim doesn't get enough credit for what he did while he was WIU's coachsealhall74 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 17, 2021 9:51 am But for a guy named Homer, Jim would have been in our HOF.
I'm sure we would have had at least one, maybe a few NCAA tournament appearances if it weren't for the Drew family and the crew of big eastern european guys they always had.meganeck wrote: ↑Tue Aug 17, 2021 5:35 pmAgree, Jim doesn't get enough credit for what he did while he was WIU's coachsealhall74 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 17, 2021 9:51 am But for a guy named Homer, Jim would have been in our HOF.

From 1999 and beyond, the program did go into a abit of a tailspin. Hard to say what may have caused the downturn in success. I suspect it was less what WIU did and more what other teams did, i.e. a powershift in the conference. ORU and Oakland joined Valpo as the teams to beat, Jim may looked into the future with the talent level on hand and said, now is a good time to leave before the shit really hits the fan. Really smart coaches know when to make that move.

A short interview with Illini HC Brad Underwood on the impact that Kerwin had on him...
