the purple and gold will be familiar for him.

I can hear him saying “go necks” already.

If Coach O was going anywhere in the FCS, I'd think he'd head to McNeese State (rumor is they backed out of joining the WAC because they have their sights set on a C-USA invite). It's still in Louisiana (close to home), and his son is the QB there (although his son is a grad student, so I think this is his last year). I don't see him dropping that far though...Tulane might be hiring soon, or he could go back to being a Defensive Coordinator for one of the "top dog" schools.

Oh I never was serious about coach O.

He made $8 million last year.

Shields, on paper, seems to be the best realistic candidate I’ve seen brought up so far. Glad to see he did apply.

2017 7-4 (5-3)
2018 2-8 (1-7)
2019 3-9 (1-5)

I presented that to my son on Friday.  He coaches at LSU and Coach O was his step dad.  That’s right…Coach O married my ex wife.  They divorced back in February.  He didn’t think Ed would move to Macomb. 😊

Whaaaaat?      Um, I mean what?  Hahahaha, hey you need to post way more and me way less!

Hm. Could that have been because they were eliminating the program making it tremendously harder to recruit? Very limited resources? Zero commitment.

He was 6-5 and then 11-1 at Lenior Rynes University the 2 seasons before.  Conf Coach of the year, Undefeated Conf Champs and made the D2 Playoffs in his last season.  Don't know if I would say homerun hire, but probably the best candidate so far.  That we are in the know about anyway.

Wiki says the 5-5 came AFTER 11-1 at LRU.  I assume that is the case based on the slant in his UNLV bio.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ian_Shields
But who knows.  Would not be the first time I saw someone mess with a coach Wiki Bio when he was up for a job.
When you come in and have success your first year, you probably riding the coattails of the guy before you like Coach Fisher did here.

Update:  LRU stat archive matches WIKI.
And further update.  Guess who the previous LRU coach was.  None other than Mike Houston.  Now them's some pretty good coattails to ride in on for sure.  After a turnaround program 2 year stint at the Citadel, he went on to take JMU to FCS title, now at ECU.

Drinkall the best IMO from just reading.  If some of that Army toughness rubs off on him like it did for Coach P, even better.  If he could steal a couple of former Necks (Hendrickson and FAMIGLIETTI) from KWU to come back and work the offense, I think we would have a good start in rebuilding this thing.  You also probably get another experienced former HC (Myers Dad) to help the program assuming the bridges are not too badly burned from the Van Alstine era. It was that long ago, right?

The Broyles Award (top assistant in college football) released their list of nominees for this year. This is relevant for a couple of reasons:
  1. A lot of these guys are going to get looked at for promotions to HC positions, and some of them are currently G5 assistants. We're not going to get Alabama's DC to come be our HC...the dude's making $1.5 million...but there's some assistants at the G5 level for whom a HC position at the FCS level might be a logical next step.
  2. At least one name on the list should be somewhat familiar to you guys...Ball State DC (and former WIU DC) Tyler Stockton

Necks2003 wrote: Mon Nov 15, 2021 4:32 pm The fact they have not announced an opening for the position, and that a team has been put together to do a national search is already scary to me. Why wait to get the ball moving and try to be ahead of recruiting and putting coaching staff's together.

Where did you see this - about the national search, I mean?

There is typically a national search done for these head coaching positions....have to make sure you interview certain number of qualified candidates and not sure how the Rooney rule impact NCAA requirements.
