I noticed that as well. No doubt about it. Poor leadership from President and AD. Hopefully this is a wake up call for administration.sealhall74 wrote:If you watched the BOB presser today, one of the attractions he mentioned was the strong vision and leadership shown within USD to move their program forward. Who do you want to see as a new HC?

I hope someone can get the info on what was offered to Yelk and staff and what staff that included. If they were expecting too much I get it.Neckfansince71 wrote:So I take it that the sky is due to fall very soon! Not! Rumor has it that there is plenty of interest in the football job!jc
If WIU drags this on and has to bring in a completely new staff and HC with not much better of a resume for more money that was offered, I'll be just about done. If we lose players and/or have a horrible year next year, I will be done.
I'm not blaming anyone at this point as we don't know the numbers, but it comes out they were just hoping to get this staff cheap and not realizing how important it is to keep things as normal as possible and keep building on the momentum, then I'll take issue with certain Admins.
The issue isn't finding candidates for HC. Th potential issue is the mishandling of this situation and stopping the momentum that this program finally had after years of nothing. I know they couldn't stop Nielson, but keeping most the staff would be huge and if poor decisions kept that from happening, changes should be made.

Would definitely be good to know. Current budget book lists VP Biller @ $183,960; Interim AD Taney @ 99,996; former FB HC Nielsen @ $206,972; current BkB HC Wright @ 129,996; while Yeck was at $64,728. Could have trebled that to $194,184 and gotta believe he'd have taken it at less that Nielsen this year (last year was same) and we'd have a chance at continuity and not look like blithering idiots in the process.letsgonecks wrote: I hope someone can get the info on what was offered to Yelk and staff and what staff that included. And that would have bought us continuity and a HC with no experience! If he is really interested, let him apply! Since the cat is basically out of the bag, let's see who is actually interested and out there! Don't we owe it to our athletes and fans to get the best coach we can? And maybe some mistakes were made but let's remember the Tank Commander's motto during WW2, F--- it and drive on!

You just don't get it done you, NFS71!? You can't expect this staff to wait around at a chance for a job when they have good paying ones waiting for them in Vermillion. If I told you next year you'd have a 50 percent shot at making $0 next year and a 50 percent shot at making $200k, or, you have a 100% shot at making $65k, which would you take. Also, while this search happens, coaches, players and recruits are fleeing. Wake up NFS71.

No, I get it Yokel! I would have been very happy tonight to have a head coach in place but it did not happen! Let's use your logic on our players! Seems to me that they all have scholarships! They will next year too. They accomplished marvelous things this season! If they stick together it can happen again! Coaches coach, but as Nikko Watson stated on one of his tweets, players play!

The biggest problem with this fiasco is not specifically that we lost out on Yeck who is sure to be gone since Nielsen intends to have his coaching staff complete by the end of this week, but rather the incompetence we demonstrated throughout. Had Biller not jumped the gun and announced he'd be introducing our new head coach today, we would have been fine. But to promise something he couldn't deliver made Western look like it hadn't a clue. That futility is what resonates.

Let's keep in mind that they don't have full scholarships necessarily. The amount some "get" in scholarship could be earned in the summer and in part time school year jobs. These players work their tails off and are owned. They deserve better. They're the sacrificial lambs in this.Neckfansince71 wrote:No, I get it Yokel! NCAA allows a max of 63 scholarships for FCS D1 schools. Don't know if Western uses that or a lower number, but I count 94 on the roster plus 8 practice squad players, so at best about a net 2/3 have scholarships. Since FCS football is an equivalency sport, rather than the headcount of FBS, partial rides are likely for some.

I have resisted posting my opinions on what is going on at my alma mater, but now I feel I have kept quiet long enough. Full alotment Fcs programs are allowed 63 scholarships to split up between 85 players who can receive any money. There is always many players who are on the team but not on scholarship.
Ok but on to the current situation.
Bob was a good hire back in the day, but did we really think we could hold on to him with our situation for longer than a few years. He wouldn't finish his career here, he would have either moved up or moved on. Looking back he did some good for the program with what limited financial support we could give the facilities and upgrades the school so well deserves. Bob was also a dud and did nothing to sell the program to the students and community. The attendance was awful and decreased each year he was in charge. This is a surprise for someone who had his athletic director experience. The attendance at games was pathetic for most of the year. He was in it for himself as an opportunity to springboard into making more money either there or elsewhere. If the reason he took the weekend was because he needed to try and pry more money out of wiu, who clearly doesn't have any with the massive budget cuts everywhere, then I have a lot of my respect for him and his tye. Now his staff was comprised of good men who will do well possibly at wiu or most likely for another program. Tyler Yelk would have been a good hire as well, while inexperienced at the hc position. He is a guy that will soon be an up and comer in the profession. The fact he isn't the head coach is due to the administration dropping the ball...again.
Now my final gripe is with the administration at this school. President Thomas and the rest of the brass at this school have let the students down. A dropping attendance and little to remedy it as far as money is concerned are tough problems everyone is dealing with, but the handling of the situations is poor. The school seems very unorganized. Why is the interim ad gone "out of the country" unless he has some slam dunk hire in (insert country here) which I doubt for AMERICAN football. He has no bussiness being there while school is in session. He has a job and could easily go somewhere in the summer. While this was a predicament many of us saw coming. He could have been more prepared. A search committee is more wasted money that the school doesn't have. When you want a job done, you hire the best candidate. The fact the search committee hasn't been formed yet shows more disorganization especially since it was abruptly announced after a hire was seemingly set. This school needs stability going through the rough patch it is in, but it can't get it from the guys who work there right now. I know we won't get a top name hire especially with what little we can offer the coach by ways of facility, travel proximity, stability and timing, but we can still get a slam dunk in the situation we got thrust into. So enough dwelling on the past and let's look to the bright future. As Taylor said:"we look forward to playing you next year coach "
