With Tanney only being an "interim" AD himself, I doubt there is a second in command. Also, someone said he hadn't been "tweeting" since Dec. 5th (I believe), which would have been just after the Dayton game. If things weren't in the works then, he might not have had any idea what he was leaving behind him. (Add to that the things Scott said about a trip like this having been planned some time in advance, which is extremely likely)

It's a mess, no doubt. Someone needs to try and keep this ship of fools from completely running aground. Just not sure who, if anyone, can do it.

Could it be that these same bumbling fools that are fumbling this situation away that lead to Nielson getting out as soon as possible?

At the presser in Vermillion it seems as though Bob stressed how surrounding yourself with quality people becomes more and more important. Is that a little hint? I choose to believe so.

Speaks volumes as to who is "in charge" at the university. From the president down.

I really dont blame coach Nielson anymore. I know what it is like to work for clueless "management".
I always thought that BOB way overdone (probably not his own choosing) the media stuff. He was required to do some by contract. Jesus, he had his own show at BWW which they usually struggled to get sound and periscoped right. I am sure attendance at that left a lot to be desired. Add in the weekly MVFC conference call (not a big time killer), the Leatherneck Club luncheon, Kipp's radio show on Monday, something on Quincy station on Thursday. 712, you can correct me if messed this up. Why not one show and make it first-rate effort?

All of the media obligations Nielson had the previous coaches also had, with the exception of the coaches show at BWW. Nielson was paid $12,000 for that show. The host was paid in chicken wings.

The previous coaches had same leadership at the top. Just saying. Did you like 'em spicy or mild. LOL

All jokes aside, if you are paying someone those kind of bucks for a half hour show 12 times, you better do it right.

I am here!

I agree with W1U: Bill Cubit withdrew from consideration after being offered the Offensive Coordinator position at UIUC.

I know that Matt Tanney is on vacation. But isn't there a "second-in-command" at Western Athletics who can act in his absence ????

The spokesperson at the Monday press conference (Vice President for Student Services Gary Biller) did not generate a positive image for Western Athletics.

Western fans will remember that it was V.P. Biller who went after the editor of the "Western Courier" Nicholas Stewart last December.
WIU has 5 people who titles are assistant athletic directors for various stuff - then Lisa Melz-Jennings title is Associate Athletic Director for Academic Services

I know this Yelk was staying and most of the coaches. The uppers killed the deal. Real smart. The other thing why would Nielson stay a month ago you wanted him to walk home from N. D. St. you talk trash about coaches, players, then you love them. You think it's so important what uniforms are going to be worn, where's the band going to sit. Hopefully players and coaches stay away from the forum. Look in the mirror. Good luck on keeping a coach and getting players it's a joke. This recruiting class is probably done at least Yelk might have saved some of it

^^^ This guy does not know how the real world works. No one is ever happy after a big loss and unfortunately the internet is a place that people let loose. Even the ones who knocked him after big losses only probably 1 out of 20 actually meant any of what they said. Plus college football is a business no matter what anyone says and business in all of Illinois is bad right now. Can you imagine what the university employees would of said had you promoted Yelk to the same salary as what Neilson had? Hell with the laying off of teachers (what a university is meant for) I am surprised we even have athletics left. If you want a nice forum go over to South Dakota I am sure for the next year they will be very upbeat over there.

The Thursday appearance was part of the 6PM Sports on WGEM. There was also a Saturday morning show on KHQA.

WIU-TV-3 used to have a weekly thirty minute show "Pigskin Preview" which featured the Head Coach reviewing the last game and previewing the next one. But I don't recall seeing that this season. So perhaps it has been dropped.

I would like to see the weekly radio show moved to on-campus sites instead of always being at BWW. Each week a different dorm or fraternity / sorority house could serve as the "host". That would be a good way to get increased student participation.

As a proud parent of a current Leatherneck player, I will post everything my son has told me over the past few days:

To say it is unfortunate that it has gone down this path is an understatement. What was going to be a promising transition, likely without a bump, in Tyler Yelk being named head coach has now turned into a farce led by VP Biller. Whatever his mindset was, he sought zero input from any player representative in making his decision to renege on the agreement between Yelk and the university. This team worked their collective asses off to achieve what they did on the field this season. They were very well coached and the fans saw that with their resilience late into games and into overtime games. They beat some very good teams and were within a couple plays of upsetting the number 1 ranked FCS team at the time. Credit Coach Neilson for assembling an excellent group of assistant coaches, over half of whom had played for him at some point and were very loyal to him. The fact that they were going to stay at WIU as a group with Yelk is a huge statement, not out of disrespect for Neilson, but of the respect they have for Yelk. Most likely will now follow Neilson to USD.

Some previous posts have thrown Neilson under the bus for leaving before his contract expired the end of next season, but fail to take into account that when he was hired it was part of a rebuilding process that was to include renovation and expansion of the football facilities. My son and several players were also recruited under the same dog and pony show of new locker rooms, new field house, expanded stadium, etc, etc. We certainly were not aware of the dire financial status of the school and the state and its effect upon higher education in the state and I certainly am not saying football is more important than a good education, it’s a game. To say that players are attracted by facilities is an understatement and USD is moving boldly to expand and improve the facilities in Vermillion, no different than SIU has done in the past few years. On our recruiting trip to WIU, we met with AD Bell and he gave us the overview of the expansion plans. They got shelved, he left, now Neilson left, and likely most if not all of the assistant coaches will leave.

The revival of Leatherneck football that Coach Neilson engineered will likely crash and burn, and that is unfortunate as you have a great group of players that are very loyal to each other and very well coached. To say that WIU will bring in the best of the best coaches is naïve. What will attract a strong D1 assistant or strong FCS coach to come to WIU besides money? The school has already shown it is not willing to put that out there. They would have gotten a reduced overhead with Yelk and maintained the continuity of the program. The assistants called the plays and made the adjustments, Neilson oversaw it almost like a CEO, which is what you want a good head coach to do. Who know what they will get at this point. Maybe Biller has a “buddy” he wants to get the job. His idiotic mindset that they have to do a grandiose national search is going to lead to another 4-7 season at best. Too bad he could not have followed the example set by McNeese State, the only undefeated FCS team this year going into the playoffs, who quickly elevated their defensive coordinator to head coach (his first time) when their HC left to take over at ULM and the majority of the staff stuck around McNeese State. Lets make sure we give a big cheer next year for VP Biller.
