If all goes well here and in a couple years a MAC head coaching job opens, why wouldn't he bolt?
That's college football today...who's to say Ash wouldn't call it quits after a couple of years?? Maybe he decides that he doesn't have the energy to continue?? At his age that's a possibility.

I think any coach that has more than a couple years of success here will take a bigger/better job. Unless it is someone that truly loves wiu/Macomb. But, if bigger schools are snagging our coaches, I'd take that as a good sign the program is trending in the right direction.

I completely agree, but any FCS program should hope to have the same problem. Any real successful coach at the FCS level will be lost to higher levels, but if they have several successful seasons to earn that right than it should be a good thing. Hopefully, if that were to occur, maybe we could still maintain some of their precedents to carry on their previous successors.

Something is missing here...it was mentioned that there was a lot of talent at Montana State to fail...somewhere along the way the players lost something for Ash and like the AD said...we won't win a championship every year but we should at least compete with all that we have put into it! That's telling me that what Ash was doing just wasn't enough...WHY?? I really don't care what Ash did at Juniata (never heard of that until yesterday) or Drake of the Pioneer League. I wonder if any players at Montana State were disappointed when Ash was fired...That would be some interesting information to gather.

When I first heard Ash was fired I texted a recent former player and his reply was, "About time."
Talking with a few others (all defensive players and special teams-- i.e. no offense.) none were too unhappy with his departure.
I was told before games especially CAT/griz he would tell defensive players to calm down..."It's just another game." The guys I know that play or played defense didn't appreciate the approach.
One of our running backs in an interview lamented he appreciated Ash's trust and just hoped the new coach would trust him.
That said, I certainly only spoke with a very small and not a broad sample of the team.

I would pick ash his pros when he was at Montana St he cared about the alumni and the community from all i've read which is very important something that the last staff didn't really do it's not all about winning games you need those relationship to get fans in the stands something ash did at Montana St they had 18000 at pretty much every home game last year. Looking at his roster he had a lot of texas and california kids to great football states. He has plenty of head coaching experience which means he should be able to get an experienced staff and hopefully someone who could take his spot.
Cons he's from iowa yet he only had two iowa guys on the roster.
Fisher pros he is younger yet not to young where if he has a lot of success other schools may pass based on age. He has coached at the fbs level and should have some connections to bring in a good staff and get some players from fbs schools.
Cons he's never been a head coach at this level. most of his coaching has been on the east coast so he doesn't have Midwestern connections.

Being a former middle linebacker I can assure you that is exactly what I wouldn't want to hear! Offense is more finesse and defense is played with aggression! You can't tell a defensive player to calm down it's just another game...lol!

Again, Coach Ash was fired for a reason and yes he won a lot of games but none were the important ones. It was easy to terminate him because the AD didn't have to worry about offending the boosters.

I will listen to what he has to say on Thursday...

I want a coach who emphasizes two things:
1) Running the ball and 2) stopping running the ball.
Fancy passing schemes are nice to watch and might put a few more fans in the stands but they usually do not translate to Ws on the scoreboard.
If you can't do these, you will not fare well in the Valley because this is the bread and butter of NDSU and UNI and has been for years.
Need I also mention that both of this year's Natty teams fall into this category.

Here are the FCS programs which are top 20 in both stats along with MSU, Richmond, and WIU added for comparison purposes.

1) Rushing Offense
3 Jacksonville St. 14 694 4364 6.29 52 311.7
12 North Dakota St. 14 661 3369 5.10 30 240.6
13 North Dakota 11 510 2625 5.15 23 238.6
15 UNI 14 655 3266 4.99 32 233.3
16 McNeese St. 11 510 2566 5.03 25 233.3
17 Delaware 11 533 2413 4.53 15 219.4
18 Montana St. 11 458 2376 5.19 31 216.0
31 Richmond 14 554 2673 4.82 39 190.9
74 Western Ill. 13 515 1831 3.56 21 140.8

2) Rushing Defense
4 McNeese St. 11 339 961 2.83 4 87.4
6 North Dakota 11 370 1103 2.98 9 100.3
7 North Dakota St. 14 413 1420 3.44 12 101.4
16 Jacksonville St. 14 489 1632 3.34 12 116.6
17 Delaware 11 371 1359 3.66 8 123.5
18 UNI 14 532 1739 3.27 15 124.2
51 Richmond 14 485 2192 4.52 17 156.6
84 Western Ill. 13 572 2539 4.44 27 195.3
119 Montana St. 11 490 2722 5.56 25 247.5

Very frustrated and disappointed. 100s of applicants after the possibility of retaining a core of good, young, and valuable (bang for your buck) coaching staff, who from all indications really liked WIU and the Macomb community... and what do we get? A guy that was fired from a mediocre Big Sky program and a journeyman offensive coordinator? C'mon man...

I'll be happy to be proven wrong and I'll grill up some crow in Q-Lot if the program keeps progressing with either of these two at the helm. But for now, I'm just frustrated and disappointed.

On another note... Seal... any way you can find out who applied (not just interviewed, but applied) for the internal AD search? That's not a question alluding to a bashing of Tanney, I just want to know if anyone else showed interest internally.

You really think Yelk or Blazek would be better choice, really?
