Updates to faculty layoff plan and other stuff
Eastern Illinois University is scheduled to deliver layoff notices this week to 198 Civil Service employees. This move has been prompted by the state's ongoing budget impasse.
EIU President David Glassman announced these layoffs in an email to the campus community late Monday afternoon. In addition, all administrative and professional employees will be required starting on March 1 to take the equivalent of one day of furlough time per week every month until further notification or up until June 30.
A very angry EIU Civil Service employee told a radio news reporter that "Anyone who voted for Rauner should be moved to the top of the layoff list".

WIU and EIU are pretty much in the same predicament. Rural setting, most students from up north, trying to cater to them all with a vast variety of program offerings. IMO, the Illinois system schools will eventually choke the lifeblood out of both of them unless some major program realignments are done. Given some sort of umbrella leadership, they could give each school an identity based on what programs are emphasized. Dont ask me how best to split things up. Maybe one could have a liberal arts and teacher education focus. The other might become a high tech learning center along with health sciences. Those are just examples. In summary, just getting some money from the state is not going to solve the real problem with reduced attendance.
Embrace the pace of the race.

I wonder how much "voluntary donations" in dollars the faculty union or faculty have contributed to the crises???? Hard to ask others for donations if you haven't contributed yourself. Looks like staff is asked to take a big hit.

Sure, combining departments would help WIU as you'd need fewer Chairs. But you could also eliminate 1 Dean and 2 VPs.
Why does the Library, who has all of 52 employees with 15 instructors/faculty need both a Dean and an Assistant Dean. They are not faculty with full teaching loads like in other department, so that even questions why 13 are tenure track faculty, including the very vocal head of UPI. At most, call it the Department of Library Services replacing 1 Dean and 1 Asst Dean with 1 Chair at a lower than Dean salary.
Why does the QC Campus, with all 155 employees, including 63 faculty, and 550 full-time and 590 part-time students need a VP and an Asst VP. At best, this should be 1 Associate Provost or Asst VP under the President at a lower than Dean salary.
As important as fundraising is, why does Advancement and Public Services need a VP and Asst VP? At best, an Executive Director of Advancement and a Director of Public Affairs, both at lower salaries and reporting directly to the President.
The only VPs I seen needed are Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and Administrative affairs, with each having just 1 Asst VP. Similarly for Deans, just 1 Asst Dean, and no Asst Chairs
Gotta imagine deflating the administrative bloat at the Dean and above level would save $1million/year.

You are right on. Union refused to give up raises unless guaranteed to get them back in 2017. No one said UPI made sense in their demands, especially given they see no problem with having too many faculty for the students we have.vatusay wrote:So, unless I've got stories mixed up, the union refused to give up raises in order to retain job. Now they want "voluntary donations"?
You have GOT to be joking. Or maybe I'm butt-backwards in my thought process.

Yep, as I said before, a coddled group with a strong sense of entitlement. Welcome to the world of tenure and labor unions in education.
