I am part of the 1976 team reunion this weekend and we are all staying at the Macomb Inn for $55 a night that I negotiated 309-833-5511. Just mention the '76 reunion to secure that rate...supposedly the rooms have been renovated. We'll see!
Our team featured several All-Americans, including Paul Bowens, Greg Lee, Scott Levenhagen, and Jim Scruggs.
Coached by Bill Shanahan, the 1976 Leathernecks finished 7-3 as an NCAA Division II independent. We were ranked as high as 3rd in the country until Steve Mariucci (QB) and Northern Michigan beat us 44-7.
We started the season with four consecutive wins, defeating South Dakota State, Weber State, Central State, and Youngstown State. WIU also posted wins over Eastern Illinois, Nebraska-Omaha, and Illinois State, finishing 4-1 at Hanson Field.
We ended the season with consecutive losses to Akron 21-14 and South Dakota 28-7 to miss the playoffs.
Both Levenhagen TE and Greg Lee cornerback and return specialist will be back as well as many others.
Should be a great weekend! See you Saturday!

Thank you 57.
I love contributions like that. I can't Imagine how proud you must feel to be a Football Leatherneck for all time and to re-connect with your brothers. You guys are the ones that make this guy proud.

The 1976 Leathernecks were excellent. I attended the Weber State game in Macomb. I lived in Madison, Wisconsin at the time so I made the trip up to Marquette, Michigan for the Northern Michigan game which was very difficult to witness. The 1976 NMU team was a great football team but we also had an off day. Enjoy the reunion!Leatherneck57 wrote:I am part of the 1976 team reunion this weekend and we are all staying at the Macomb Inn for $55 a night that I negotiated 309-833-5511. I have played out this game in my thoughts several times. I see a very close, hard fought battle and I hope my prediction is wrong:
North Dakota State 24
Western Illinois 21

This Bison team actually beat a top 15 FBS team.... so yes you are right.sealhall74 wrote:These are not the Bison of the past. .
NDSU got outcoached last week, they refused to mix things up on offense and clock management was very uncharacteristically bad at end of the 1st half and on last NDSU drive... That wont happen again.
NDSU will come out & take out some aggression on WIU. You have a good young team, I expect alot out of WIU in the years to come.
Good luck.
