Another thing to keep in mind is that Nielson could just be kinda looking around...getting a feel for things...before going into negotiations with our administration about what we can offer. Essentially, might not be seriously considering moving, but using other offers as a bargaining chip or a "baseline".

What does this do for recruiting? Just yesterday all assist coaches were tweeting out what region they were recruiting at. Now I wonder, is it ethical to recruit for South Dakota using Western Illinois University vehicles and paid by the state of Illinois? How can coach Nielson knowingly send these coaches out when he knows he's interviewing for another job. If the assistants didn't know they did by this morning so all these trips by coaches just wasted Illinois tax dollars.

While we're "what if-ing", with the state budget the way it is and cuts being made, would there be any coaching staff that could be promoted from inside the program instead of facing the possibility of trying to bring someone in?

I don't know the coaching staff, so don't even know if it is something that could even be done. Just asking in case we would have to look for a new head coach.

If he leaves, you know he is taking a handful of coaches with him. Another question. Doesn't a HC under contract need permission from AD to talk to other schools?

It would seem to be a lateral move overall. He would have to start the rebuilding process all over again to get the players he needs for his coaching scheme. He may make a bit more money in the short run, but if he ever wanted to try move up to the FBS level it would likely slow his progress until he could prove to be a dominant coach at the FCS level.

Lets clarify a few things here before everyone goes a little crazy about coach N.

1. He has coached a long time and final got a FCS Job
2. The guy is getting near 60 years old he has a move or maybe 2 left
3. This South Dakota move might be his last move, stay 3-4 years
4. I don't think he is on the radar right now for any major FBS Jobs
5. Came to Western had 1 winning season, next year is no slam dunk without Nikko and other loses
6. He can make a lateral move and have a winning season or 2 make more money and he is a STAR

Is it mere coincidence this news broke on the same day as the WIU Budget meeting. The university is going to be cutting positions of staff making in one year what Nielson just made in incentives for this past season.
