Head Football Coach at D1 institution should be able to bring his own strength staff, S&C obviously has not been evaluated by administration at WIU otherwise their would have been changes made with W/L record in all sports. We can’t have a developmental program if that doesn’t start in the weight room.34blast wrote: Thu Nov 30, 2023 11:40 pm The head coach needs a holistic approach to building a program. A man with a vision of success in the future. I'm waiting to see who turns up. But I only watched a few games, but we seemed slower, weaker, and not exhibiting sound technique. We need good recruiters to get the best talent we can. At FCS level, many of the guys will be less heralded but have potential. Many will need to hit the weights seriously to get bigger, stronger and faster. That takes a good strength and conditioning program and time. So there might be guys at say OL that come in like 6'4" 260 but weak and chubby. By year three you are hoping for about 300 pound strong human with sound fundamentals. At this level, the strength and conditioning program program might be more important than elite D1 prospects, as they have further to get to a good level. That said, you don't need overly expensive stuff, but have the right stuff and the right program to make it happen.

Even more of a reason Jason Williams would be a home run hire for the new HC, whoever it may be.Guest wrote: Fri Dec 01, 2023 7:47 pm S & C coach is for all sports, not specifically football. So the new coach would have to be able to hire his own S & C coach in addition to the overall one.

We probably weren’t ever in the running for him, but Wright was hired as HC at Northern Arizona.ST_Lawson wrote:I don't have any idea what our potential candidate pool looks like, but here's a guy who would be probably my ideal "attainable" candidate: Brian Wright (current HC at DII Pittsburg State)
Originally from Ohio...in the last 20 years was OC/QB coach at Youngstown State, Montana State, Florida Atlantic (became interim HC for 4 games there where he went 4-0), Toledo, and finally HC at Pittsburg State in 2020. Pittsburg State does have a history of success before he showed up, having won the DII championship in 2011, but they're 32-7 since he took over, appearing in the DII playoffs in the last two seasons and was MIAA Coach of the Year in 2022: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Wri ... _football)
Wright made $150k at Pitt State last year.
He's had experience at the DII, FCS, and FBS levels, being at least an OC at all of them. He's had three full years of head coaching experience (not counting his 4 games as interim at FAU or the 2-2 COVID season).

I’ll be pretty shocked if that ends up being the direction they goRockydog wrote: Sun Dec 03, 2023 7:51 pm I can’t believe we are supposed to name a new head coach in 5 days and the only name we’ve really heard is Tony Sorrentino. I’m good, if that’s our guy, but I’m surprised we haven’t heard much about the other 39 applicants.
