I dont like it either. As the rich get rich, the poor get poorer. You guessed it. I am not a strong capitalist, more of a strong union guy.vatusay wrote: Sat Dec 14, 2024 7:26 am I say it every year, the portal is the worst thing to happen in college sports.

Embrace the pace of the race.
I think that for some student/athletes the flexibility can be a good thing, but I agree that it's been horrible for the teams and their fans. I used to very closely track offers, commits, recruiting classes...now I don't feel like there's any point.vatusay wrote:I say it every year, the portal is the worst thing to happen in college sports.
I don't feel like we even get to know any of the players. If they get enough attention in a season that I know their names, they're probably moving on to somewhere else the next year. It feels like 95% of the teams don't have a chance to actually build anything.

I don’t think the portal would such a mess if it wasn’t for NIL

If I was a low level mid-major coach, I dont think I would waste the time redshirting players any more. Let them prove early on whether or not they have the right stuff to be on the field.

Agree…I wouldn’t redshirt anyone. Because kids aren’t interested in development…they just want to chase the bag ofsealhall74 wrote: Sat Dec 14, 2024 4:54 pm If I was a low level mid-major coach, I dont think I would waste the time redshirting players any more. Coach Caraway posted this yesterday…
“ I just looked it up: there are 6,311 active football players in the NCAA Transfer Portal at this moment.
Of that total number:
- 2,073 players are from FBS schools
- 1,639 players are from FCS schools
1) There aren’t 6,311 spots - much less 6,311 scholarships.
2) That doesn’t count JUCO/NAIA guys looking for a home.
3) There are thousands of D2 and D3 guys trying to move up.
Recruits, the music will stop and the ride will end - when it does, make sure you’re playing football and not just collecting graphics and offers”.
Me: Those are alarming numbers. The portal is a mess right now. Look at Matthew Henry’s offers. UTEP, Arkansas State, Kent State and Rhode Island. Really nothing to write home about for a 6’1 178 WR. That size is considered undersized for FBS wideouts. Wherever he goes I doubt he will be the go to guy like he was in our offense. If I were a player today I would hate to be in the portal!
I did see a couple of our walk-ons that entered the portal just committed to NAIA schools. That’s why outside of Merklinger and Henry the kids going in the portal didn’t bother me. Our cornerbacks #1 Piper saw a lot of action this year and has one offer to Houston Christian University and #4 Henry has 0 offers. That would be scary in my eyes!
At the end of the day…a lot of kids will not have a home to begin Spring semester and will miss the important Spring ball schedule!
Another thing to think about is that some of those kids could see what the portal is offering them (minimal offers mostly from teams around the same level) and could decide to just stay (like DeLaCruz did last year). But yeah, only one or two of our guys who still have eligibility are turning any heads at the FBS level (or even at the top ranks of the FCS). If they leave, I wish them the best and hopefully the coach can replace them with guys just as good if not better.Leatherneck57 wrote: Sun Dec 15, 2024 1:08 pmAgree…I wouldn’t redshirt anyone. which in a lot of cases doesn’t happen.

agree and if I was a player, why not go in the portal and see what someone will offer you.leatherneckcountry wrote: Sat Dec 14, 2024 2:38 pm I don’t think the portal would such a mess if it wasn’t for NIL
Like Matt Henry, he will probably go somewhere else and probably get some NIL money, but I doubt he will have as many catches or TDs if he stayed at WIU.

Oh I’m with you…I wish them all well. But if you’re on scholarship especially a full ride it would be scary walking away from that.ST_Lawson wrote: Sun Dec 15, 2024 3:26 pmAnother thing to think about is that some of those kids could see what the portal is offering them (minimal offers mostly from teams around the same level) and could decide to just stay (like DeLaCruz did last year). A lot of kids may not be playing football next fall at the level they want.
So, for those of us who are uneducated as to the portal, once a player enters it, has he cut all ties with his former team? I'm only really familiar with Juan DeLacruz, and he ended up coming back as did Reagan McGowan in women's basketball. How does it work?
