Something is screwy, just not sure what it is. This is pretty much the same offensive team we had last year, and they played tough all year (except for the 4th quarter of a lot of games).

Were we all expecting too much? Was the offense expecting too much? Has their "hype" gone to their heads?

I know it's always blame the coach, but what is going on in the heads of the players that has them messing up so badly? Is it pure coaching or lack thereof, or do they have more problems than that?

All I know is it's depressing considering the moments of brilliance they showed last year.

Redneck you are not being a jerk, Nielsen is not d1 ready. Different game you have to be good at all three facets of the game. Ward covered his flaws at defense. He knows nothing about special teams and has no one on staff to bail him out. And the offense was ok with the holdovers from old regime. It will be worse next year if this staff stays. We got schooled a veteran d1 coach and staff

I'm not ready to hit the panic button yet. Here are my thoughts:

[*] It was my first time to Memorial Stadium and I really enjoyed the day. I would estimate about 400-500 people from Western made the trip

[*] Offense did not play well. Struggled up front and couldn't get the run or pass game going. We should of had the ball in good field position after the touched punt that was overturned. Could have at least had a field goal.

[*] Defensively we did well, for the most part. We were on the field too much. Taylor played well.

I want to see how Illinois does next week. If they win, I will feel better about this game.

Let's see how we do against CCU and SIU. If we don't win either game, then I will start to be concerned.

Does anyone know if WJEQ 102.7 is going to stream the Bob Nielson Show on Monday evening?

1st & 10: The WIU promo ad makes me think not. http://www.goleathernecks.com/news/2015 ... h=football
2nd & Long: The WJEQ website also makes me think not. http://wjeqfm.com/
3rd & Desperation: TuneIn mentions something about listening to it on phone so that gives me a glimmer of hope. http://tunein.com/radio/Classic-103-1027-s29810/
4th & Forever: Punt and pray.

Scott Kornberg has some pretty tough questions to toss at Coach N this week. If it is not being streamed, I hope someone can record and post it.

My feeling is the season is still young and I am not going to over-react even with an ugly loss against an FBS team that was noticeably quicker and more athletic at nearly every position on the field. Next week will be a better test but still a very difficult one as CCU looks like they are clicking on all cylinders right now. Unfortunately, we may not really know how good we are until after Homecoming game against SIU.

I agree the season is young, but they didn't look all that great against Eastern either.

I don't think most of expected a win, but I don't think we expected as many 3 and outs and as little yardage and possession time as we got. I think we thought we could at least move the ball some of the time.

Panic? No. Disheartened? You bet.

It was a very long drive home to the suburbs. The Necks could just not get anything going for the entire 60 minutes of football played yesterday. :( jc

What do they have in common? An offensive line in front of them. LOL
Yes but mcshay once again looked better and norvell threw typical an interception

I will add this. We had a very well attended gathering on Friday night sponsored by the Leatherneck Club. It is the type of thing that we (WIU) need to do more often. Coach Nielsen mentioned during his remarks that a majority of the Illini starters were upperclassmen, compared to WIU where a majority of its starters were underclassmen. Would definitely have an effect initially on the game imo. I agree with the comments regarding the defense! They played hard and together through out the game but wore down as time ticked away. They took Lenoir out of the equation ala kick returns by kicking through the endzone a number of times. It also seemed like the Necks could not get the "fortunate bounce" as most punts instead of rolling for more yardage seemed to roll back up towards the line of scrimmage. Even my wife was depressed by the end. First downs, time of possession, yards gained, really tells it all. As Charlie Brown has said numerous times, "ugh!" jc

When comparing mid-major programs like us with the bigger programs, I think we tend to focus on the players a little too much. Sure, they have a few more scholarship players and that makes a difference. But the bigger difference IMO is in the overall staffing advantage that they have. They will certainly have more strength and conditioning people in place. Most will even have people working in very specialized areas like nutrition, endocrinology, data analysis, etc. Tough to compete against all of that.

WhyTF are they still punting with such wide splits. Kick out of the classic tight formation where they only have to protect the ends. Already 3 blocked and most almost blocked. Send the gunners and the snapper, we don't need max coverage for 30 yard punts.

Every pass is the first option and I know their D had some pressure but in order to find an opening you need multi move and option routes. No sacks and only 3 qb hits (1 roughing the passer though), so there was more time for double moves and 2nd reads.
Ran one good play on the fake swing pass to Westbrook and norvell tried throwing a pick instead of hitting a very open Borsellino who most likely have taken it the distance as the safety was up and actually below him.

If you're going to waste time faking gives on passing plays instead of looking at your first read, you should only do it if they have to respect your run and then you should at least go over the middle behind the lb's.

Defense was actually great. Imagine if they were on the field less. Had a bunch of passes in the soft part of the zone, but with not a lot of pressure it gives them time to find the zones and sit. Should be able to get a little more pressure against FCS, though the Valley has some solid OLines. Contained another future NFL Rb so should bode well in that respect.

Better get more creative and build some consistancy, otherwise we might not win again. Not calling it a year and believe IL will have a pretty good year, especially defensively, but something needs to change on offense to have a chance .
