SIU-Carbondale reports 7.5 percent drop in fall enrollment.

From the Associated Press:

Southern Illinois University officials say fall enrollment is down 7.5 percent from the same period a year ago.

Interim Chancellor Brad Colwell says 15,987 have enrolled this fall, compared to 17,292 last year. University officials said Tuesday they aren't surprised by the drop in enrollment.

University officials say the loss of 1,305 students translates into about $6.5 million of lost revenue, but the university has already accounted for it in a prior $21 million cut in spending.

Colwell said the university is looking to the future and will use market research to determine how the school is perceived and what students are looking for.

Colwell said the goal for fall 2017 is to stem the drop in enrollment and increase the freshman class by 10 percent.

Now that we've hit 10th day, I'll start putting together enrollment numbers for the universities as I see them published. So far what I've got:
SIU-C - 15,987, a decrease of 1,305 (7.5%) vs the previous year and a decrease of 5,016 (31.38%) vs 10 years ago
SIU-E - 14,142, a decrease of 123 (0.9%) vs the previous year and an increase of 693 (4.9%) vs 10 years ago
ISU - 21,039, an increase of 251 (1.2%) vs the previous year and an increase of 778 (3.7%) vs 10 years ago

I'll post more as I am able to find them.
At the current rate, it looks like within a couple of years, SIU Edwardsville will be a larger school than SIU Carbondale.
I have also heard that U of I is projecting record enrollment, but I don't know exact numbers yet.

Illinois State University says it has its largest freshman class in decades. The 3,638 freshmen is the largest incoming class in 27 years.

Preliminary figures released last week by UIUC indicate freshman enrollment is up by a dozen new students and overall enrollment is up by about 700 students over last year.

However SIU-Carbondale was one of at least four Illinois public universities bracing for enrollment declines.

Numbers from SIU-Carbondale show a 23.69% drop in the number of freshman, and a 17% drop in sophomores. There are increases in the amount of juniors and seniors. Grad student enrollment fell 12%.

I've had this number for a bit now, but couldn't publish it until the post came out: http://wiu.edu/news/newsrelease.php?release_id=13849

New freshman enrollment is stable from last year (technically down 8 students). Overall enrollment did decrease, because the incoming freshmen class is still smaller than the incoming freshmen class from four years ago (essentially, the current "Seniors").

Our overall enrollment is 10,373, which is down 721 total students, a 6.5% drop from last year.

Considering projections back in spring were looking like we'd be down another 300 or so students (they were thinking we might drop below 10k), this is pretty decent news at this point.

I am happy with these numbers at the moment! I really do think the campus community has put student recruiting a number 1 priority! We just need a decent budget! jc ;)

Yet, I don't know that I'd agree with the "Future is Bright" headline of the article. The good news was stable frosh numbers and increase in frosh to soph retention. Everything else was down. If the administration rests its laurels on this we are still headed down toward former President Goldfarb's predicted 6K enrollment numbers.

Biggest surprise to me is the slight falloff in international students. UIUC is making a killing in that area (+5K students from China alone in last decade). Yes, there are a lot of language and other challenges in taking on Intl students but the market is YUUUUGE and most of them dont need federal or state aid. Maybe we can't compete in that area because we would need to hire a lot more ESL teachers but worthy of a note anyway.
Embrace the pace of the race.

Total enrollment is down 5.5% at Northern Illinois. Total enrollment was counted at 19,015 on the 10th day of classes this year. There are 1,115 fewer students enrolled at the school than there were at this time last year. The largest decline is in the freshman class, while smaller declines took place among transfer and graduate students.

Total undergraduate enrollment at NIU declined to 14,079, down 6.2 percent from 2015. Graduate school enrollment fell 3.7 percent to 4,672. Enrollment at the law school grew 4.3 percent.

Eastern Illinois University President Glassman today said in his state-of-the-university address that “more than 7,400 students are enrolled at EIU this fall….” Last year, according to university website, 8,520 were enrolled.

UIUC, UIC, and UIS will announce their enrollment figures on Thursday.

So we still need to hear from Chicago State, Northeastern Illinois, and Governors State.
