Looking in the years before as well, the two years before Nielson took over were .182 (2-9) and .272 (3-8).

Sure. And technically, if SIU scored 23 more points this year, they would be sitting very pretty at 9-0. Very fine line between winning and losing a football game. The real question to be asked is "Are we getting better in those areas of the game which dictate consistently putting up Ws?". Not seeing it from my LazyBoy at the moment.

True, it does feel like we've regressed somewhat.

I threw together a quick spreadsheet comparing last year's CONFERENCE ONLY stats with this years (still 2 games to go so things could change). When you total up the ranking positions, we are about even (+3). However, several places, we have fallen off drastically. Take a look at Rushing Offense and Rushing Defense. I certainly would put those 2 in the Top 5 MIS (Most Important Stats) in determining success on the field. If you can run the ball, you keep the clock moving and your defense fresher for later in game. Pass Efficiency is another big dropoff as is our sack rate. You can make up for not having sacks with good coverage. But if you can't stop the run, you are up a sh*t creek without paddle or toilet paper. Take a look at this year's Rush Defense leaders. Those are the teams going to the playoffs.
