If it's Yelk, I love it and hope he keeps as many people as possible. To be a successful HC you need a High Football IQ, staff you can work with and trust, confidence and TALENT. We have talent and who's to question his football IQ and confidence, especially everyone on the outside looking in. As much as people want to hate on Nielson (I get it), the guys wins everywhere, so I'm confident that Yelk has been groomed well. Throw in he was an outstanding football player and seems to be of high character.

Does everyone think that only successful coaches in the history of this game have had D1 HC experience or 15 plus years experience on Power 5 staffs? Sometimes you have to take chances on people, sometimes because of time and money you're forced to take chances and though this might be the ladder, we won't know until we hit the field next year. PJ Fleck had almost 0 coaching experience and took Western Michigan from 1-13 his first year to a bowl game in 2014 and back bowling this year. Rod Carey's highest position was OC for 1 year at NIU before taking over as HC and he's doing pretty well. These are just 2 examples of guys off the top of my head since they're from NIU.

Look at YSU. Same team as last year, coach with the MOST FBS HC experience and wins in all of FCS and the same result.

This should keep the recruiting moving forward, players happy, BOB in the rearview and that's what matters right now.

Yep, everyone has to start somewhere. If he cares, it's a big step in the right direction. I've never had that feeling about the exiting coach. Not hating, he's just always seemed distant to me.

Agreed...I don't mind this. I think he's got good potential, having success on both the playing and coaching side of things. He's young, has energy, seems to have the players confidence.
Also, if you look at what happened this year to the special teams when his influence was taken away and he was put in charge of the defensive secondary...that's gotta say something.

Good to know! The key is to surround yourself with "football minds!" I guess I get the Coach Nielsen thing. I was just raised in a home where "loyalty" was an expectation. It still bothers me about Luke leaving. But that's the way of the world know a days! ;) jc

Well, Ashley got a dose of karma when she went down in pre-season with a torn ACL. Shall be interesting to see what karma finds Nielsen.

I assume you mean Ashley Luke? I don't really blame her at all. I think she intended on moving because of the personal reasons (to be with her husband) and for her future, and then the opportunity opened up with Green Bay and she took it. Get to be with your spouse and still finish up your last season playing basketball somewhere...it's a win-win for her.

Nielson left because of $....that's it.

And yea, I love looking back at the coaching records at Western after Ball left vs his record at SWMS/MSU.

Could find any mention online about the Press Conference, but Twitter reports new HC is Tyler Yelk.
