I assume most of the residence hall rooms are still "occupied" with students stuff still there. Am I correct? If so, that could turn into a massive cleanup effort if things dont open up for the fall session.

I've heard that they're working on setting up a system for people to come back to campus for a short time to get their stuff. Like, reserve a time slot, only 20 people allowed in the dorm at one time, etc. I think the plan is to do that in May. Students left for spring break thinking they'd be back in a week, so there's probably all kinds of stuff still left all around the dorm rooms.

An Administrator at NIU says that perhaps 30% of colleges and universities are in the stage of near-closing mainly due to the pandemic.

NIU will be looking at making some significant cuts.

The Iowa Board of Regents is envisioning some semblance of normalcy returning this fall, with all three public universities (Iowa, Iowa State, and Northern Iowa) working toward “a full, normal operation” for the 2020 fall semester.

That would include “in-person classes, re-opening of residence halls, food service, and other campus services,” all of which have been shut down because of the novel coronavirus pandemic, Iowa Board of Regents President Mike Richards has said.

Exactly how the schools will manage a return to thousands of students to their campuses isn't yet clear, but Richards said the universities will follow state and federal guidelines to protect the health of students, faculty and staff.

The pandemic's disruption to university operations has proven expensive. Iowa State University, for one, is facing more than $80 million in losses and additional expenses since April 3 because of COVID-19.
