For those that aren't aware, Kill turned a perennial conference "doormat", Southern IL, into a powerhouse. 1-10 the year he started (2001), 4-8 his second year, then two 10-win seasons, two 9-win seasons, and a 12-2 season. Under Coach Kill, SIU made the FCS playoffs for 5 straight years and won the conference championship 3 times. He then took a job at Northern Illinois and after a couple of mediocre seasons (still went to bowl games, though), in his 3rd year, had NIU at 11-3 and in the Humanitarian Bowl. He then went to Minnesota, went 3-9 his first year, but then had winning records and played in bowls for the next 3 years.\

Between the 7 years at SIU, 3 years at NIU, and 5 years at Minnesota, Coach Kill went 8-1 against the Leathernecks, with the only loss during his first year at SIU.
