Of the returning players from last year:
McDaniel and Rollins started in all 12 games. Additionally, Nichols, Davis and Chungong played in all 12 games. Whitaker played 9, Privott played 8 and Phillips played in 4.
McDaniel had 68 total tackles (47 solo), 2 tackles for loss for 7 yards, 2 interceptions for 17 yards, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.
Rollins had 66 total tackles (35 solo), 4 tackles for loss for 11 yards (including credit for ½ of a sack), 2 interceptions for 1 yard and one forced fumble.
Nichols had 56 total tackles (32 solo), 2 tackes for loss for 14 yards (including credit for 1 sack of 13 yards), 1 interception for 97 yards & 1 TD, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries.
Davis had 50 total tackles (37 solo), 3 interceptions for 43 yards & 1 TD and one fumble recovery.
Chungong had 7 tackles (2 solo).
Whitaker had 4 tackles (2 solo)
Privott had 4 tackles (all 4 credited as solo)
Phillips had 1 tackle assist
Luis Sharpe transferred from Glendale CC (AZ) during the offseason and will have 2 years left.
Everyone else was either redshirted or still in HS last season.
According to the depth chart for the first game, here’s who we have starting and backing them up:
Cornerback:
Starters - Richard Chungong and Martinez Davis
Backup - David McDaniel and Marquette Privott or Luis Sharpe
Free Safety:
Starter - Dallas Nichols
Backup - Myles Spearman
Strong Safety:
Starter - Jonathon Rollins
Backups - Josh Smith or David Griffith
So, Griffith is listed on the depth chart as a possible backup for Strong Safety, even though he’s a true freshman. Unless Smith can’t get the job done, I’d imagine they’d lean towards using him as backup over Griffith so that they don’t have to burn his redshirt year.
