They will lose prospective students over this, more than will transfer out to UIS. This sign is just a a little prick, they need to look at the big picture. It appears to me there is no leadership. I vote no confidence in the current administration.

I will be honest. I was at a community college event yesterday, where graduating cheerleaders and players were being recognized. Two of the cheerleaders were announced as going to WIU. Someone in the crowd laughingly said- "if it's still open". The negative perceptions are starting to grow.
Considering that the cuts are supposed to take place over the next 2 yrs tells you that the administration thinks that they will be ok for a while.

Nothing personal, just business. I doubt if the UIS President cares what Thomas thinks. Western's perception is very low right now, of course competitors will pounce on it.
Western needs a big PR move to reassure people. It seems like they are sitting on their hands.
This is very true and most cities with Universities have multiple signs for other universities. I lived in Champaign for a while and would regularly see EIU and SIUE signs in town. I am assuming they usually do not bother putting them up in Macomb since it is a smaller town, but saw a opportunity to accept transfers. Funniest thing is most of the people I know and even when I was in college thought UIS was a community college.

The UIS billboard is specifically addressed to "Transfer Students".

With its placement adjacent to the Western campus, it is quite clear who the intended audience is.

Yes, my comment should have been better worded- I intended to say Western would [possibly lose more prospective students because of all of this "closing" talk than students who would actually transfer to UIS. I don't believe many will transfer, or even explore that option. However, the longer this financial crises talk continues, the greater possibility incoming students might check other options.

According to the UPI Union President on 2/29/16, the faculty and academic advisors of Western Illinois refuse to give up their 1% pay raise effective July 1, 2016.

That means the faculty and other protected by the UPI Union refuse to be part of the solution, instead allowing their arrogant pride to only be part of the problem as all non-protected employees have mandatory furloughs. The only way the protected classes will be harmed at all is if they are included in the 100+ layoffs and additional contract term reductions.

Is the UPI going ahead with the plan to give back a percentage of their salary to a designated fund to help buy supplies, etc ???

This is voluntary, individual by individual, and even if folks do, it won't impact the budget. From what I've heard, some of the faculty who want to give back simply won't do so in this manner as it allows UPI to control the donated funds.

Administration has been playing this shell game for years and avoided criticism. Al Goldfarb gave his raise back most every year in the form of a donation. But he did, in fact, accept the raise thus accomplishing three goals 1)Costing the university the money in salary payout and associated employment taxes; 2) Boosting his pension by increasing his pensionable base salary; and 3) Receiving a nice income tax deduction for the donation.

Jackie plays the same game as do many of the supposedly selfless admins who chose this option over real savings by accepting a salary reduction.

Dumb question but I will ask. Is union membership and/or payment of union dues mandatory for all faculty? If not, what is the participation rate?
