Viewing the doctors as faculty, this would mean faculty has agreed to be part of the solution at Eastern and now Southern. What's up Western!wiu712 wrote:SIU doctors' pay cut to help med school survive state budget impasse
Doctors at Springfield’s Southern Illinois University School of Medicine will see a 5 percent cut in their pay for treating patients so more of that money can be used to keep SIU operating amid the state budget impasse.
The cut is directly tied to the lack of payments received by the medical school for the care of state workers, retirees, and dependents insured through the state’s group health insurance plan.
The cuts, which may remain in place until a fiscal 2016 budget is worked out by Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and the Democratic-controlled General Assembly, also are related to the medical school’s lack of state funding since the fiscal year began July 1.

Are we still teaching math and journalism in Macomb?wiu712 wrote:From today's "Western Courier":

If 10 students spend a combined $850 on average during a week in Macomb, that is an average of $85 per student per week. If 1000 students leave, that is $85,000 lost business dollars, not $850,000. Or I am missing something here?

That is correct. $850 per 10 students per week is the same as $85,000 per 1000 students per week. Still a chunk of money, but not $850k.sealhall74 wrote:If 10 students spend a combined $850 on average during a week in Macomb, that is an average of $85 per student per week. Saying that SIU-Med's doctors (many of whom never, ever enter a classroom- they are practicing physicians) represent the SIU faculty is, well, beyond a major stretch. When the 1000+ faculty in Carbondale AND Edwardsville *voluntarily* do something then you can say that the SIU faculty has offered to help.
Here's a link to the latest UPI newsletter. Page two outlines in pretty good detail the forthcoming choice WIU-UPI members will have to save the university money.
In short, members will vote on two things. The first to give back the 1% raise due on July 1. The other will be a temporary 2 year give back of 3%, with a set of triggers to get the money back if the university's financial situation improves. This is very similar to the EIU giveback.
This is on top of a 4% giveback in 2010 and, I think, a 2% giveback in 2014. In the years since they were passed this has amounted to well over $30,000 out of my pocket.

This 5% pay cut will affect all of the approximately 240 doctors who are members of the SIU group practice (SIU Health Care), as well as some of SIU’s nurse practitioners and physician assistants.Leatherneck10 wrote:Saying that SIU-Med's doctors (many of whom never, ever enter a classroom- they are practicing physicians) represent the SIU faculty is, well, beyond a major stretch.
Despite a reduction in the share of patient-care revenues that SIU doctors will receive, what won't change are faculty members' separate, fixed salaries from the medical school.
Some doctors receive the majority of their total pay based on the patient care they provide through SIU Health Care, while other doctors get most of their pay through fixed salaries from the school.
The medical school is also preparing for the potential elimination of more than 100 jobs under Rauner’s proposed budget for the next fiscal year.

While we're naming which groups have stepped up, I haven't seen a movement from the retirees to give back a percentage of their pensions. Or even a movement from within the retiree community to change state law allowing their pensions to be taxable Illinois income.

Even with that tax loophole, IL still makes the list of 10 worst state to retire in. Go figure.Leatherneck10 wrote:While we're naming which groups have stepped up, I haven't seen a movement from the retirees to give back a percentage of their pensions.
