Western vs Illinois State - 10/18/2014
STLredbird, does ISU consider this game as big of a rivalry game as WIU does or are we just another game to you guys? I know ISU has a big rivalry with EIU which is a little surprising since they are non-conference, but started long ago if I remember right when they were actually in the same conference. It has to be the closest game either of these two teams play against and shares the Peoria and Springfield market for students and alumni.
Weather at kickoff is now projected to be 58 degrees and sunny all day long. Should be beautiful, but bring the hats and shades because even though it'll be nice and cool, you can still get pretty well crispy, especially those of us sitting on the east side (student section, band, also any Illinois State folks that are reading this and making the trip) who will be essentially looking towards the sun for much of the game.
Also wanted to toss in a few numbers for the "rivalry" discussion.
ISU against EIU has an overall record of 52-41-9 (102 meetings) going back to 1901.
ISU against WIU has an overall record of 42-50-3 (95 meetings) going back to 1904.
Also, ISU and EIU are ~90 minutes away from each other. ISU and WIU are ~2 hours away from each other.
I can kinda see why ISU might not consider us as much of a rival as some other schools though, since we only play football against them (although that'd be the same situation as EIU).
They do also have a 33-40-3 record (76 meetings) going back to 1929 against SIU, but they do play them in all of their sports currently, since they're both in the Missouri Valley for all sports.

ISU also has a feature rivalry with EIU...

The Mid-America Classic is the rivalry game between the Illinois State and Eastern Illinois. The rivalry began in 1901 and is the oldest in the state of Illinois. The two teams have played 100 times in total, with Illinois State holding a 51-40-9 advantage in the all-time series. With the 100th game in the series on the horizon, representatives from both schools met in the spring and developed the Mid-America Classic renaming for the rivalry. The two schools also collaborated on a traveling trophy, which holds plaques with the results of the previous 100 games in the series and has room for results of future games in the series.
Always wished WIU would get one of these going with someone. Back in the day I wanted it to be with UNI, but I think establishing a bona fide rivalry with SOMEONE is in WIU's best interest. Heck I think they should just go ahead and make up a trophy and call it something like the "Land of Lincoln trophy" and it travels with any Illinois FCS team who can win it. If EIU has it and SIU beats them then it goes into SIU hands until another FCS team in Illinois takes it from them... you get the idea.

I like the idea of a traveling trophy for Illinois FCS. However, I see a problem when it comes to scheduling. For example, SIU would much rather play a Taylor U instead of NIU if you know what I mean. Maybe it would work if you open it up to all sports with the stipulation that each school must schedule X number of games with the other state schools during any given year. Maybe get the deadbeats in Springfield to pass some legislation to enforce it and it just might work. I would love to see an ISU/SIU come to Western Hall some year in the future.Superneck wrote:ISU also has a feature rivalry with EIU...

Embrace the pace of the race.
If we could just get EIU into the conference, then we could have an Illinois FCS traveling trophy. All the Illinois FCS schools would be in the MVFC and would most likely play each other every year. It'd be ISU, EIU, SIU and WIU. In the group of 4, whoever has the best record against the other three gets the trophy. If there's a tie (or if it ends up being a circle of parity...WIU>EIU>SIU>ISU>WIU...then we go to actual MVFC record. If there's still a tie at first there, then we go to overall season record.sealhall74 wrote:I like the idea of a traveling trophy for Illinois FCS. So just looking at Div. 1 schools in Illinois. Here is a quick list of "established" rivalries. I did notice when reading on some of them that there are times when the troophy sits on a shelf if the teams dont face each other in a given year. Such is life. I want one for WIU. Figures U of I screwed up my Land of Lincoln name. SIU doesn't appear to have one yet either. The Salukerneck Trophy? The Leatherluki?

Well, we're kinda both "dogs" (yes, I know a Leatherneck is not a dog....but I mean Rocky, bulldog logo, etc.). SIU is a Saluki dog.
Lincoln Dog Trophy?
The Dog House?
The Illinois Chew Toy?
I'm sure someone more creative than myself could come up with something.

I'm old enough to remember the start of the Gateway conference and how WIU and UNI set the pace. Others would make some noise for a year or two, here and there, but it was pretty clear who the class of the league were. In the run up to any EIU game, everyone on the ISU side of the fence would always refer to it as a rivalry game - well before the Mid-American Classic thing. In the run up to any WIU game, there would be less of this rivalry talk. Frankly, I have no idea why. It pre-dates my time as an ISU fan.WIU0812 wrote:STLredbird, does ISU consider this game as big of a rivalry game as WIU does or are we just another game to you guys? I'll say this. In my lifetime, Western has been the school that has left ISU on the short end of the stick more often than not. It is a conference rival and the games tend to be bitterly contested. But Eastern was the one that was always called out as the rivalry. I'm going to ask the question about how this came to be over at rbf.net.
