Names should start to surface since WIU had a candidate on campus yesterday. Wonder if Western will follow tradition and go with an unproven but up and coming offensive play caller or go against the grain with a defensive coach. I say go against the grain only because Western has historically over the last few decades gone with an offensive coach. If you look at their previous conference, the MVFC, the majority of the current head coaches have a strong defensive background. Universal Quantifier exaggerations such as always and never are not the blanket type of statement I’m making (“Western Illinois never hires defensive minded coaches and defensive coaches always win”). Just indicating it’s worth looking at and thinking about.

Indiana State | HC with Defensive background
Illinois State | HC with Defensive background
Missouri State | HC with Defensive background
Murray State | HC with Defensive background
University of North Dakota| HC with Defensive background
North Dakota State State | HC with Defensive background
UNI | HC with Defensive background
South Dakota State | HC with Defensive background

South Dakota | HC with background on both sides of the ball
Southern Illinois | HC with Offensive background
Youngstown State | HC with special teams background

IMHO, defense wins championships, especially the ability to stop the run.  But there is much more room for scheming on the offensive side of the ball where a really clever coach could excel.  I now have three different flavors of neural networks up and running, each trained with the weekly statistics and game results for all D1 games over the past 2 years.  I am going to look into the internal weights and biases of each to see which statistical categories (offense, defense, special teams, etc.) have the most impact on the outcome of a game.  Stay tuned.  Should be an interesting scavenger hunt.

This, but also lacks head coaching experience. So depends how much weight you put in that aspect.

I think everyone has their own personal criteria that they're looking for. For me, I'd like to see someone who has experience calling plays. That's not always a HC, so personally I'd like to see someone with at least coordinator-level experience. Obviously that's not the only criteria though, so it's possible there are candidates out there who don't fit that mold who would still be a good HC.

We just had a HC with prior d2/naia HC experience.  Did not work put very well.  He also was as connected and passionate about the Macomb community as any candidate could be.  We need an OC/QB guy that has had success at the FCS level. Midwest ties preferred.  Someone who understand offensive football, can develop the QB position and will be patient and diligent about hiring an excellent staff.  OL Coach and DC priority for him.  This is a chance to do it right as we enter OVC play.  Energy, enthusiasm and a vision to make the Necks great again!  There are great candidates right in our backyard!

Jeromy Dowdell - OC - SEMO
Joe Davis - OC - EIU
Blake Rolan - OC - SIU
Tony Peterson - OC - ISU

Great list to start with!!!!
