Spring enrollment is down by 471 (a whopping 6.8% decrease from spring, 2023) and the press release from WIU has people thinking that enrollment is up.
They have to try to make things look good. Do you want them to put out a press release saying "Enrollment is down, everything is horrible"?Neckerchief wrote: Wed Feb 07, 2024 11:47 pm Spring enrollment is down by 471 (a whopping 6.8% decrease from spring, 2023) and the press release from WIU has people thinking that enrollment is up.
Also, a significant part of that drop were students caught by the new policy where you can get put on academic suspension for getting a zero GPA in a semester.
Essentially, we had a large group of students who were not attending class, weren't even trying to do any work, and were just here for "the college experience" (ie partying with friends away from home) for a semester or a year and then going back home. In the past, after one semester under 2.0 GPA, those students would have been on academic warning or probation and allowed to come back for another semester. With the new policy, a zero GPA automatically puts them on academic suspension (essentially kicked out for a year). So, on the plus side, most of the students who weren't interested in even attempting any work are no longer here, but on the downside, it hurts our total enrollment numbers for a bit.

Unfortunately, there is little end in sight as the BOT chose to extend the current President's contract to June 30, 2025. Under the interim the didn't want we were headed in the right direction. Under this one, it's been consistently down hill.

It was the current who made the change in a ludicrous effort to boost numbers.ST_Lawson wrote: Thu Feb 08, 2024 8:08 amThey have to try to make things look good. And why wasn't the report we are paying $200k for done for the Retreat. We CAN NOT wait for the 3rd contract to expire before we get help. Clearly, this admin has no clue.wiu712 wrote: Fri Feb 09, 2024 5:53 pm WIU BOT to administration: "You’ve got some tough decisions in front of you".
