Ryan Crandall tweeted he has entered the transfer portal
Played in all 12 games this year, 91 total tackles, 53 solo, 11.5 for loss, 1 forced fumble. Led the team in tackles and tackles for loss.
I guess it's probably to be expected that we'll lose guys on the defensive side if the DC was let go (and possibly other defensive coaches).

I'm assuming he's looking to take a step up, be it a FBS team or a higher level FCS school, but then again maybe as bad as the defense was there might not be a big demand for our defensive guys.

That's kinda my thought too. Idk how much of the defensive struggles were the players and how much was the coaching though. There's probably a few guys on defense that we'd like to keep around, but I don't really know who they would be.

Mostly player shortcomings IMHO. We were way too slow up front. Not enough speed or physicality in the DB positions along with being out of position quite a bit. You cant coach players to be quicker but when they are out of position, that could be on player or coach.

Crandall posted he was offered by Southern Illinois

thats why I thought the DC would get another year at least, give him a chance to bring more of his type of players.

As the Transfer Portal opens, many people will not find a home.
Make sure you know why you enter. Not everyone in the Transfer Portal finds a home.
Know your "WHY" !
Agreed. When you have a scholarship in hand, be ready for that to go away once the decision is made to hit the portal. A very large portion of those who enter, never reach a new destination and their college careers quickly go no where. I wish everyone the best, but the transfer portal is generally going to be upper echelon talent traveling and getting picked up. Average players just don't really get picked up and end up at home. When you ask the "WHY", I hope they take into account the risk that goes along with it. The grass is always greener on the other side, but that doesn't mean that you can't simply take care of your own grass and make it better than what it appears. First world problems I prefer to have than not. Leaves us something to complain about!
Whatever happens, I hope we can benefit from the portal as well as recruiting on the defensive side. Crandall was a bright spot, for sure, but 1 guy can't make a defense work. Hopefully the portal will "giveth" as well as "taketh away".
