Sam Dancer hanging tough. Lives in Quincy, and, I believe he and his wife went to Western.
CARLSBAD, Calif. -- A leg injury may have slowed Sam Dancer. It never deterred him.
Dancer refused to be sidelined by the injury, finishing 32nd in the men's individual division of the Reebok CrossFit Games, grinding through the final five events Sunday at the StubHub Center.
Dancer, the Quincy native and owner of Qtown CrossFit, tied for 33rd place in the 280-foot handstand walk, then finished last in the suicide sprint. His best finish of the day was 12th place in an event called "the plow."
He then finished 19th in the rope chipper in a 8 minutes, 38.16 seconds. In the final event of the four-day, 15-event competition, Dancer tied for 33rd in an exercise called the redemption.
A graduate of Quincy Notre Dame and Western Illinois University -- he played football at both schools -- the 5-foot-10, 215-pound Dancer accumulated 418 points in his first appearance at the games as an individual. He and his wife, Jennie Nobis-Dancer, competed in 2014 as part of a six-person team that finished second.
Dancer won the ranch deadlift ladder, clearing 615 pounds. He also finished ninth in the squat clean pyramid and 12th in the plow.
Mathew Fraser won the CrossFit Games championship with 1,096 points, finishing outside the top 10 in only one event and finishing first or second in eight events. Ben Smith, the 2015 champion, was second with 899 points, while Patrick Vellner was third with 863.
