Sounds like he was getting some pro interest, but teams suggested he get a year of experience playing college football first. Hadn't played football since high school, but obviously he's a pretty exceptional athlete in general (if he's getting interest from pro teams without playing a down at the college level). He's got one year of eligibility...taking the option where, if you graduate, you can transfer and play your final year at another school right away (Like Pat Smith did when he played his last year at Nebraska).
