So, the Macomb newspaper has a blip in the "Police Briefs" that Quadrias Mireles was arrested Wednesday for possession and manufacturing or delivering 30-500 grams of marijuana.
Anybody heard anything about this?
Mireles arrested?
This was in the "Police Beat" section of Saturday's Macomb paper:
MACOMB POLICE DEPARTMENT
Quadrias Antoine Mireles, 24, of Macomb was arrested for manufacturing or delivering marijuana 30-500 grams and possession of marijuana 30-500 grams on Wednesday.

I wonder how this compares to what Coprich at Illinois State was arrested for. Coprich "tried to sell between 10 and 30 grams of marijuana".
Is "manufacturing or delivering" the technical term for trying to sell? And 30 to 500 grams which would be the next "step" up from the 10-30 that Coprich was arrested for.
Whether or not you think it should be legal, it is not right now in IL. Dumb move. I think I saw someone mention that he had been moved from WR to a DB position...maybe?
So, thoughts?...suspended from team pending investigation?...completely off the team regardless of verdict?...or is this of the level where we're talking prison time? Any legal experts around?
From what I was able to turn up, it looks like:
"Selling or possessing with the intent to sell, more than 30 - 500 grams of marijuana is a Class 3 felony, punishable by a minimum sentence of 2 years and a maximum sentence of 10 years, and a maximum fine of $50,000."
"Possession of more than 30 - 500 grams of marijuana is a Class 4 felony for a first offense, which is punishable by a minimum sentence of 1 year and a maximum sentence of 6 years, as well as a fine of $25,000."

There is only one reason you get moved out of WR position and that is you just ain't cuttin' the mustard in places and times when it counts. The staff did the right thing in giving him a second chance to succeed but he chose not to learn from the situation and took the wrong turn. Better now than late September. Move on from it. Next man up. Let's do this.

Guess we'll have to wait and see how this plays out. Sucks either way. Could get the charges reduced depending on his history and whether or not he was actually busted distributing. Wonder what the circumstance were; could have been driving a car and the pot was in there, could have been busted at home, or could have been selling????
Could get a game or two and could be off the team. Sucks when people with opportunities throw them away. Anyone read the article about Antonio Allen from INDY?

I'm pretty sure the move to CB was because of the depth at WR and lack of depth at CB. He had spent some time at CB while redshirting at Ole Miss, so had experience. Plus, his skill set and body type seemed better suited for CB, but that is all moot at the moment.

Yea, it said "manufacturing or delivering" which could be anything from "he's got a few plants in his basement that he grows for personal use of himself and his friends" to "sitting in a car in a parking lot, selling baggies to high school kids". There's a big difference in those two scenarios, but I think either could qualify for what he was charged with. If he's not actually selling, just growing and happened to have over 30 grams sitting around the house, then I think a suspension is warranted, but like you said...maybe a few games. If that's the case, then that'd be different from Coprich in that Coprich was actually busted for attempting to sell (to an undercover officer). Coprich was suspended for a while, but was eventually allowed back on the team.letsgonecks wrote:Guess we'll have to wait and see how this plays out. Sucks either way. Also, I agree with you on the reason for the move. We're heavy on WR (w/ Lenoir and Borsellino being primary starters, plus lots of young talent...Lesure, Hoogerwerf, etc.) but light on the DBs. We lost Richard Chungong, Martinez
Davis, David McDaniel, Marquette Privott, Jonathon Rollins, and Charlie Whitaker from last year (as opposed to only Hi-C Scott from the WRs). The starting DBs that are returning: David Griffith and Dallas Nichols, accounted for a total of only 41 tackles between the two of them last year. Part of that is due to having so many relatively experienced DBs, so I'm sure they'll step up some once they are the primary starters. However, it means that they don't have as much experience, and adding an extra body with CB experience and talent would give them more options on that side of the ball.

From what I remember in the ISUr message board, what Coprich was arrested for was also a felony, but he got a break when he was sentenced (in my opinion).
I still think he should have gotten the boot off the Redbirds, so it's pretty clear I think the same thing should happen to Mireles. I know, I know, the whole "innocent until proven guilty" thing....but to my mind, that would be as far as his actual legal standing goes. I also know kids will be kids, however, being involved in competitive athletics on campus should carry the knowledge that you will be held to a higher and stricter standard.
Too bad he screwed up, but he did. Boot him.

I agree- boot him. Send a message you won't tolerate players - or students- breaking the law. How simple is that, want to stay on the team, don't knowingly break the law. Always amazes me what folks will do to ruin their opportunities. Suspend him until the case is completed, and go from there. Felony is a felony, not parking illegally somewhere.
Really getting tired of the constant headlines of college athletes being arrested in this country. Following D3 looks better and better.

I hope Tanney made that point perfectly clear at the "All Hands On Deck" meeting they had yesterday. Would have loved to been a fly on those support beams at Western Hall.leatherface wrote:I agree- boot him. Send a message you won't tolerate players - or students- breaking the law. Went back to check today, since I know I didn't see him playing or suited up for the game last night.
Completely unsurprisingly, Mireles is no longer listed on the roster, so it looks like he's off the team.
I agree with this decision.
Still currently listed as a student in the campus directory.
